How to get the smoke battlestaff

The smoke battlestaff is only obtainable as a drop from the thermonuclear smoke devil ("thermy"), the boss version of the smoke devil, at a rate of 1/512. Thermy lives in the Smoke Devil Dungeon south of Castle Wars and requires 93 Slayer to damage; it can only be fought while on a smoke devil Slayer task.

Because it trades freely on the Grand Exchange (buy limit 8 every 4 hours), most players simply buy one for around 2.1M rather than farm thermy. You can find it via the GE price tracker or browse the full magic gear list.

Is the smoke battlestaff worth it?

For the price, yes. The unlimited air and fire runes make it ideal for fire spells (Fire Strike/Bolt/Blast/Wave/Surge) and the 10% accuracy and damage bonus on the standard spellbook applies to combat spells, curse spells, and even non-damaging utility spells like Teleblock. That makes it a strong low-cost choice for magic gear setups and for splashing.

The natural upgrade is the mystic smoke staff, which gives better melee and magic stat bonuses while keeping the same 10% spellbook bonus. You create it by taking your smoke battlestaff plus 40,000 coins to Thormac (reduced to 30,000 or 20,000 coins with the hard and elite Kandarin Diaries). For higher-end magic, dedicated weapons like the trident of the seas or the Tumeken's shadow outclass it, but they cost far more.

Should I make a mystic smoke staff?

If you want better stats, yes. Take your smoke battlestaff plus 40,000 coins to Thormac to upgrade it into the mystic smoke staff (reduced to 30,000 or 20,000 coins with the hard and elite Kandarin Diaries). It keeps the same 10% standard-spellbook bonus and adds stronger melee and magic stats.

Is the smoke battlestaff good for splashing?

Yes. Its unlimited air and fire runes mean you never burn rune supplies while splashing, which is why it was historically the most popular battlestaff for that method. The 10% bonus has no downside for non-damaging casts either.
