Trident of the seas

“A weapon from the deep.”

The Trident of the Seas is a one-handed powered staff that needs 75 Magic. Once charged with runes and coins it fires its own built-in spell, whatever spellbook you are on. It drops only from cave krakens and the Kraken boss on a Slayer task, and it is the base of the trident line: a magic fang turns it into the Trident of the Swamp.

Equipment bonuses

As a worn item it gives +15 magic attack and +15 magic defence, with small melee defences of +2 stab, +3 slash and +1 crush. The damage comes from the built-in spell, whose max hit scales with your current Magic level: 20 at 75 Magic, and one higher for every three levels after that.

How to get the Trident of the Seas

The trident is a Slayer drop, and you can only kill its sources while on task.

Ways to obtain it
Cave krakens — drop the uncharged trident. You need 87 Slayer and a cave kraken task, and the task itself needs 50 Magic to be assigned.
Kraken (boss) — drops a fully charged trident. Same task and the same 87 Slayer requirement.
Grand Exchange — the uncharged and fully charged forms are tradeable. A partly charged trident is not, much like Barrows equipment.

Charging the Trident of the Seas

The trident holds up to 2,500 charges and uses one per cast. Each charge costs one death rune, one chaos rune, five fire runes and 10 coins, and charging needs 75 Magic. A full charge from empty takes 2,500 death runes, 2,500 chaos runes, 12,500 fire runes and 25,000 coins.

Two details matter. First, the coins are lost when you uncharge it. Only the runes come back. Second, elemental staves and the Fountain of Rune cannot stand in for runes, but combination runes and runes in a rune pouch can. A trident charged with combination runes always returns fire runes when you uncharge it.

If you die and lose it, only the uncharged trident appears on the floor. The charged spell also cannot be used against players in dangerous PvP, only in safe minigames.

Trident of the Seas vs its upgrades

Trident of the Swamp: with 59 Crafting you can attach a magic fang to make the Trident of the Swamp. It adds +10 magic attack, a higher max hit and a venom effect, but each charge costs a Zulrah's scale instead of 10 coins, and it needs 78 Magic.

Sanguinesti staff: at the same Magic level, the Sanguinesti staff hits 5 higher than this trident, but it needs 82 Magic to wield.

Enhanced trident: Lieve McCracken turns an uncharged trident and 10 kraken tentacles into a version that holds 20,000 charges, which saves recharging on long trips. For other magic weapons at your level, see magic gear.
