Gargoyle Guide

Gargoyles are combat level 111 Slayer monsters that require level 75 Slayer to harm. They live on the top floor and in the basement of the Slayer Tower in Morytania, are aggressive, and attack with melee. Examined in-game as "Flies like a rock," they have 105 Hitpoints and a max hit of 11.

The one rule that defines the fight is the finish: gargoyles, like rockslugs, cannot be killed normally. Once a gargoyle drops to 8 Hitpoints or lower you must use a rock hammer (or equivalent) on it to smash it — if you keep hitting past that point it simply will not die. They are a popular Slayer task because they drop a steady stream of rune armour, runes and noted materials that alch well. This light guide covers the 75 Slayer requirement, the rock-hammer finish, the gear style and how to kill them efficiently.

Requirements & where to fight

To harm gargoyles at all you need level 75 Slayer — there is no quest requirement. They are assigned by Vannaka, Chaeldar, Konar quo Maten, Nieve and Duradel. There are two places to fight them, both in the Slayer Tower:

  • Top floor — the original spot, open to anyone with 75 Slayer whether or not gargoyles are your current task.
  • BasementSlayer-task only. These are available solely to players assigned gargoyles; if you try to attack them off-task, Raulyn will prevent you from doing so.

One quirk of location matters for poison: the top-floor gargoyles are susceptible to poison and venom, but the basement gargoyles are immune to both. The top-floor gargoyles also sit just past the aberrant spectres, who drain your stats if you are not wearing a Slayer helmet or nose peg — you can skip past them using the Agility shortcut in the north-east, or the 81 Agility shortcut on the southern wall that takes you straight up from the ground floor.

Gargoyles can be safespotted near the doorway in the south-west of the top floor, or in the north-east corner of the basement behind an immovable bucket on the floor.

The rock-hammer finish

This is the single most important mechanic, and the thing new gargoyle slayers always trip over. A gargoyle cannot be killed by damage alone — you have to break it with a hammer once it is nearly dead. You have three valid finishers:

  • A rock hammer, a rock thrownhammer, or a granite hammer, used on the gargoyle once it reaches 8 Hitpoints or lower.

There are two ways to make this automatic so you never miss the window:

  • Gargoyle Smasher perk — bought from any Slayer Master for 120 Slayer points. With it, the gargoyle is smashed automatically when it falls to 9 Hitpoints or lower, as long as you have a rock hammer (or equivalent) in your inventory.
  • Granite hammer equipped — if the granite hammer is your equipped weapon, it auto-smashes gargoyles even without the perk.

If you skip the hammer and just keep attacking, the gargoyle will sit at low Hitpoints and never die — you will waste the whole fight. Buying the Gargoyle Smasher perk or wielding a granite hammer is the cleanest way to avoid this.

Recommended stats & gear

Gargoyles attack with Slash melee (attack speed 4) for up to 11 damage, so the defensive answer is Protect from Melee, which negates almost all of the damage they deal.

On offence, gargoyles are a melee task and their defences point you straight at one style. Since the Project Rebalance changes they have high stab (50) and slash (60) defence but a crush defence of −20, so a crush weapon is the standout choice — which also lines up neatly with the granite hammer (a crush weapon) auto-smashing them. Train and gear toward Strength and Attack for fast melee kills, and bring a melee setup with the best crush weapon you can wield.

Two secondary options exist if you want them: gargoyles have a 40% elemental weakness to earth spells, and their heavy Ranged defence was cut to −20, so earth spells or Ranged can work — but melee with a crush weapon is the meta and the most efficient. Gargoyles are also golems, so golembane weapons are effective against them. For the exact best-in-slot loadout for your stats, use our Boss Gear Finder above rather than guessing at item choices.

Inventory & supplies

This is a low-risk, loot-dense task, so the inventory is built around staying out longer rather than survival:

  • A rock hammer (or rock thrownhammer / granite hammer) — non-negotiable; you cannot finish a gargoyle without one.
  • High Level Alchemy runes — strongly recommended. Gargoyles drop a lot of rune armour, and alching it on the spot saves inventory space and trips to the bank.
  • A modest amount of food — with Protect from Melee up their max of 11 rarely lands, so you need little healing.
  • Prayer potions if you intend to keep Protect from Melee on for the whole trip.
  • If you are fighting on the top floor, poison or a weapon that applies venom is an option, since top-floor gargoyles are not immune to it (the basement ones are).

Strategy & kill rotation

The loop is simple once the hammer is handled:

  • Set up: equip your crush weapon (a granite hammer doubles as your auto-smasher) or buy the Gargoyle Smasher perk for 120 Slayer points so finishing is automatic. Turn on Protect from Melee.
  • Fight: attack a gargoyle until it reaches 8 Hitpoints or lower, then use your rock hammer on it — or let the perk / equipped granite hammer smash it for you at 9 or lower.
  • Loot: pick up the rune drops and alch them with your High Level Alchemy runes, bank the noted materials and coins when full.

If you want a low-effort trip, safespot them — near the south-west doorway on the top floor, or behind the immovable bucket in the north-east corner of the basement. The basement is task-only but keeps you away from the aberrant spectres entirely.

Notable drops

Gargoyles are valued for volume rather than a single big-ticket drop — their loot is a steady mix of rune armour, runes, and noted materials (gold ore, pure essence, steel and gold bars, runite ore) that alch into reliable gold, which is exactly why High Level Alchemy runes are recommended.

The two marquee uniques are the Granite maul at 1/256 and Mystic robe top (dark) at 1/512, both from the pre-roll table. On top of that they have a chance at a Brimstone key when killed on a Konar quo Maten task, hard clue scrolls, and a Brittle key tied to the Slayer Tower roof unlock. Use our GE price tracker to value the rune gear and materials you bank.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting the rock hammer. Without one you physically cannot kill a gargoyle — it will sit at low Hitpoints forever. This is the number-one trip-ender.
  • Missing the smash window. Manual finishing only works at 8 Hitpoints or lower. If you do not want to watch for it, buy the Gargoyle Smasher perk (auto-smashes at 9 or lower) or wield a granite hammer (auto-smashes when equipped).
  • Using a stab or slash weapon. Their stab (50) and slash (60) defence is high; crush defence is −20, so a crush weapon kills far faster.
  • Trying to attack basement gargoyles off-task. The basement is Slayer-task only — Raulyn blocks off-task attacks. Use the top floor if gargoyles are not your current task.
  • Expecting poison to work in the basement. Top-floor gargoyles can be poisoned and venomed; basement gargoyles are immune to both.
  • Skipping High Level Alchemy runes. You will fill up on rune armour fast and waste trips banking it instead of alching on the spot.

Gargoyle Guide — FAQ

What level Slayer do I need to kill gargoyles?

You need level 75 Slayer to harm them. There is no quest requirement. They are assigned by Vannaka, Chaeldar, Konar quo Maten, Nieve and Duradel.

Why won't my gargoyle die?

Gargoyles cannot be killed by damage alone. Once one drops to 8 Hitpoints or lower you must use a rock hammer, rock thrownhammer or granite hammer on it to smash it. To make this automatic, buy the Gargoyle Smasher perk from a Slayer Master for 120 Slayer points (auto-smashes at 9 or lower), or wield a granite hammer, which auto-smashes when equipped.

Which prayer and weapon should I use against gargoyles?

They attack with Slash melee, so use Protect from Melee. For offence they have a crush defence of −20 (versus high stab and slash defence), so a crush weapon kills fastest. For the exact best-in-slot setup, check the Boss Gear Finder above.

Can I fight gargoyles off-task?

Yes, on the top floor of the Slayer Tower — you still need 75 Slayer, but they do not have to be your current task there. The basement gargoyles are Slayer-task only; Raulyn stops you attacking them off-task.
