How OSRS combat level is calculated
Your combat level comes from a fixed formula. A defensive base is set by Defence, Hitpoints and Prayer; an offensive part is set by whichever fighting style is strongest — melee (Attack + Strength), Ranged, or Magic. The game adds the base to your best style and rounds down:
- Base = ¼ × (Defence + Hitpoints + ⌊Prayer ÷ 2⌋)
- Melee = 0.325 × (Attack + Strength)
- Ranged = 0.325 × ⌊Ranged × 1.5⌋
- Magic = 0.325 × ⌊Magic × 1.5⌋
- Combat level = ⌊ Base + the highest of Melee, Ranged or Magic ⌋
Because only your strongest style counts, training an off-style stat does nothing to your combat level until it overtakes your current best — which is why a pure account barely moves when it levels a second style.
What is the highest combat level?
The maximum is 126, reached with 99 in every combat stat. An account built purely on Ranged or Magic (with the other offensive stats left at 1) caps lower, at 109, because melee counts two stats (Attack and Strength) while Ranged and Magic each count only one.
What is the lowest combat level?
The minimum is 3 — a brand-new account with every combat stat at 1 and Hitpoints at its starting 10.

How is OSRS combat level calculated?
Add a base of a quarter of your Defence, Hitpoints and half your Prayer, then add 0.325 times your best fighting style — melee uses Attack plus Strength, while Ranged and Magic each use one-and-a-half times that level. The total is rounded down to your combat level.
What is the max combat level in OSRS?
126, with level 99 in all seven combat stats. A pure Ranged or Magic account caps at 109, because melee counts two stats while Ranged and Magic count only one.
Which stat raises my combat level the fastest?
On your strongest style, Attack and Strength give the most per level for melee (and Ranged or Magic give even more, since they are multiplied by 1.5). Defence and Hitpoints each add a quarter of a level, and Prayer adds a quarter every two levels. Training a style you are not using does nothing until it overtakes your current best.
Does Prayer affect combat level?
Yes. Every two Prayer levels add a quarter of a combat level, so 99 Prayer is worth a meaningful chunk of your total — one reason players rush Prayer levels to climb combat brackets.
