The Tormented synapse is a rare drop from tormented demons in the Ancient Guthix Temple, and it is the key component for the three high-tier demonbane weapons. Use it on the right base item and it becomes Emberlight, a Scorching bow or a Purging staff. It cannot be worn or used on its own, so the page is about what it turns into and how it is earned.

What the Tormented synapse is used for
The synapse is a crafting component for three demonbane weapons, one for each combat style. The recipes are below. All of them need While Guthix Sleeps finished and Duradel's notes read first.
Emberlight (melee, 77 Attack) — synapse plus an Arclight and a hammer at an anvil, at 74 Smithing.
Purging staff (magic, 77 Magic and 50 Attack) — synapse plus a Battlestaff, an iron bar and a hammer at an anvil, at 74 Crafting and 55 Smithing.
Scorching bow (ranged, 77 Ranged) — synapse used on a magic longbow (u), at 74 Fletching.
You only get one weapon per synapse. The upgrade is not permanent: each product can be reverted for the synapse alone, which lets you switch style if you change plans.
How to get a Tormented synapse
The synapse is a rare monster drop that you either farm or buy.
Ways to obtain it
Tormented demons — the only drop source. They live in the Ancient Guthix Temple, which opens up after While Guthix Sleeps. The drop rate is 1/500 per kill.
Grand Exchange — it is tradeable, with a buy limit of 5 every 4 hours.
Is the Tormented synapse worth it?
It is worth it only if you want one of the three weapons. The synapse has no other use.
Emberlight keeps the Arclight's 70% accuracy and damage boost against demons, but never degrades and has stronger stats and a stronger special attack. The Scorching bow has a smaller 30% boost against demons. The Purging staff doubles the base accuracy bonus of demonbane spells, from 20% to 40%.
If you already own an Arclight, Emberlight is the direct upgrade. Run your own setup in the DPS calculator to see whether the demonbane effect matters for the bosses you fight.
Tormented synapse FAQ
What can you make with a Tormented synapse?
Three demonbane weapons: Emberlight (melee), a Scorching bow (ranged) and a Purging staff (magic). Each one uses up the synapse, but the process can be reversed and gives the synapse back.
Where does the Tormented synapse drop?
From tormented demons in the Ancient Guthix Temple, which you can enter after finishing While Guthix Sleeps. The drop rate is 1/500 per kill.
What do you need before you can use a Tormented synapse?
You must have read Duradel's notes, which you get by asking Kuradal about her father Duradel after the quest. Each weapon then has its own skill requirement. All three need 74 in a crafting skill (Smithing for Emberlight, Crafting for the staff, Fletching for the bow).
What are the Emberlight, Scorching bow and Purging staff recipes?
Emberlight: the synapse on an anvil with an Arclight and a hammer, at 74 Smithing. Purging staff: the synapse on an anvil with a Battlestaff, an iron bar and a hammer, at 74 Crafting and 55 Smithing. Scorching bow: the synapse on a magic longbow (u), at 74 Fletching.
Does the Emberlight recipe need a charged Arclight?
Yes. The Arclight must be fully charged, fully infused, or a mix that adds up to the requirement. Each percent of infusion counts as 100 charges, so 7,000 charges plus 30% infusion works.
Can you undo a Tormented synapse upgrade?
Yes. Since a February 2025 update, each of the three products can be reverted, and you get back only the synapse. The first weapon you make on an account gives 730 XP in its skill, and each one after that gives 73 XP.
What happens to the synapse if a player kills you?
If a player kills you while you carry an unprotected Emberlight, Scorching bow or Purging staff, the killer receives the synapse, not the weapon. A loose synapse follows the normal death rules for a tradeable item.
Is the Tormented synapse tradeable?
Yes, and it can be noted. The buy limit is 5 every 4 hours.
