Infernal axe

“A very powerful, fiery hatchet.”

The Infernal axe is a dragon axe upgraded with a smouldering stone from Cerberus. While you chop, each log has a 1 in 3 chance to burn on the spot, giving you half the normal Firemaking experience for it. It needs 85 Firemaking and 61 Woodcutting to make, so it suits players who want some Firemaking experience while they train Woodcutting.

Equipment bonuses

The combat stats are exactly those of a dragon axe: +38 slash, +32 crush and +42 strength on a 5-tick swing. It is rarely a good weapon choice. The main reason to wield it is that the axe then does not take an inventory slot.

How to get the Infernal axe

You make the axe yourself. Both parts are tradeable, but the finished axe is not.

Ways to obtain it
Dragon axe — the base tool. It can be bought on the Grand Exchange.
Smouldering stone — dropped by Cerberus, and much more rarely by hellhounds. It is also tradeable.
Combine them — use the stone on the dragon axe. This needs 61 Woodcutting and 85 Firemaking, and neither can be boosted. It gives 350 Firemaking and 200 Woodcutting experience.

The upgrade is permanent. You cannot turn the infernal axe back into a dragon axe or a smouldering stone.

How the burning effect works

Each log you chop has a 1/3 chance to burn straight away. You get half the Firemaking experience you would get for burning it normally, and you do not need the Firemaking level for that log. For example, a redwood log burnt this way gives 175 experience instead of 350. The Pyromancer outfit bonus also applies.

The axe burns 5,000 logs before it runs out. After that it works like a normal dragon axe. To recharge it, use another smouldering stone or a dragon axe on it, which restores 5,000 charges.

It does not burn bruma roots at Wintertodt, sulliuscep mushrooms or celastrus bark. On those it acts as a plain dragon axe.

Is the Infernal axe worth it?

It is worth it if you want Firemaking experience at the same time as Woodcutting. Since a third of your logs disappear, you bank fewer logs, so it is a poor choice when you chop logs to sell.

It keeps the Dragon axe special attack, Lumber Up, which boosts Woodcutting by 3. For pure Woodcutting speed, the crystal axe is faster than the dragon axe, and the 3rd age axe chops at the same speed as the dragon axe.
