What this plan doesn't count

  • Mistakes. Each costs about 5 quality (2022 hand-ins).
  • Moulds you buy during the plan, unless ticked under the moulds.
  • Smiths' Uniform, unless switched on.
  • Your own pace. Hours use Wiki estimates.
  • Switching mix when you level up. Moulds that unlock on the way are counted.
  • Tool XP from hammer, grind and polish: about 2-6% more, estimate.
How this is worked out
  • Mould scores: the game cache, matching the OSRS Wiki. Free-mould levels are being verified: the cache gates some at Smithing 16-31, the Wiki Mould List puts all at 15. The plan uses the cache levels, adds each mould at the level it unlocks, and gives the Wiki-level result in the caveat line.
  • Average over commissions, each equally likely.
  • XP per sword = (q²/73 rounded down + 1.5q rounded down + 1) × 30, averaged over commissions. Hand-in XP only.
  • Kovac pays coins equal to 2 × the XP, and reputation equal to the sword quality.
  • Swords per hour: OSRS Wiki estimates (Giants' Foundry/Strategies). Smiths' Uniform +15%, estimate for the full set.
  • Bar prices: OSRS Wiki real-time GE prices, instant-buy side, each with its own trade time. A bar with no trade in 48 hours withholds the net cost. Kovac's coins have no GE tax.

About Giants' Foundry

Giants' Foundry is a Smithing minigame under the Giants' Plateau, run by Kovac. You need the Sleeping Giants quest and Smithing 15. Each sword takes 28 bars of one or two metals. You pour them into the crucible, cast the sword in a mould, then hammer, grind and polish it at the right heat. A two-metal mix scores far more than one metal, so the bars you pick decide your XP, coins and Foundry reputation. Reputation buys better moulds, the Smiths' Uniform, the Colossal blade and the double ammo mould, plus Kovac's grog, the smithing catalyst and ore packs.

Giants' Foundry FAQ

Which bars should I use at Giants' Foundry?

Two metals score far more than one: 14 adamant + 14 rune has a metal score of 130, 28 runite bars only 60. The OSRS Wiki suggests 19 iron + 9 bronze below Smithing 30, 14 steel + 14 iron from 30, 14 mithril + 14 steel from 50, 18 mithril + 10 adamant from 70 and 19 adamant + 9 rune from 85. The right mix also depends on bar prices, so the table on this page compares every mix at your level.

How much XP does one sword give?

It depends on the sword's quality: hand-in XP is (quality² ÷ 73 + 1.5 × quality + 1) × 30, each part rounded down. Quality 199 gives 25,230 XP and quality 127 gives 12,330 XP, assuming no mistakes. Hammer, grind and polish add a little more, estimated at 2-6%.

How many swords do I need for 99 Smithing?

From Smithing 70 with 18 mithril + 10 adamant and only the free moulds, about 1,000 swords (17,982 mithril and 9,990 adamantite bars). This assumes every commission is equally likely and no mistakes. Set your own level above for your number.

Does Giants' Foundry make or lose money?

Kovac pays coins equal to twice the hand-in XP. Whether you end up ahead depends on what the bars cost on the Grand Exchange. The net cost on this page is the bars at their current buy price minus those coins, with the time of each price.

How much reputation do the Smiths' Uniform, Colossal blade and double ammo mould cost?

Smiths' Uniform 15,000 reputation (tunic 4,000, trousers 4,000, boots 3,500, gloves 3,500). Colossal blade 5,000. Double ammo mould 2,000, which needs the Dwarf Cannon quest. All 15 bought moulds 5,400. Each sword gives reputation equal to its quality.

Why are some moulds locked at my level?

Sources disagree below Smithing 31, and we are checking it. Our read of the game cache gates some free moulds at Smithing 16, 29, 30 or 31. The OSRS Wiki Mould List puts all free moulds at 15. The calculator uses the cache levels and shows the Wiki-level result in its caveat line. For 14 bronze + 14 iron at Smithing 20 that is average quality 40 by the cache, or 57.7 if the Wiki levels hold.
