Skull sceptre

“A fragile magical Sceptre.”

The Skull sceptre is a free-to-play teleport staff you build from four monster drops in the Stronghold of Security. It teleports you to the Stronghold entrance in Barbarian Village. It is a staff with +10 magic attack, and members can autocast Arceuus spells with it. The plain version breaks when its charges run out, unless you imbue it.

How to get the Skull sceptre

It is untradeable, so you build it yourself from four drops inside the Stronghold of Security.

Ways to obtain it
Right skull half — dropped by minotaurs on the first level.
Bottom of sceptre — dropped by flesh crawlers on the second level.
Top of sceptre — dropped by catablepon on the third level.
Left skull half — dropped by ankou on the fourth level.

Each piece has about a 3% drop chance. Use the two skull halves together, then the two sceptre pieces, and then combine the results. Making one is part of the Varrock Hard Diary.

Charges and imbuing

A new sceptre starts with the most charges your Varrock Diary progress allows: 10, or 14, 18, 22 and 26 after easy, medium, hard and elite. The maximum carries over onto free-to-play worlds even if membership lapses.

  • A plain sceptre is destroyed when it uses its last charge.
  • An imbued sceptre is not. It needs a Jagex Account or Authenticator, and it can be recharged.
  • Each bone fragment gives one charge. Sceptre pieces also give charges, between 3 and 9 per piece depending on the piece and your diary progress.

Multiple sceptres can be owned. Unimbued ones share the same charges.

Is the Skull sceptre worth it?

For a free-to-play account, yes. It is one of the few teleports available there, and with a +10 magic attack it also works as a basic staff. Imbue it so it is not lost when the charges run out.

As a combat staff it is a stopgap. The magic gear page and the gear compare tool show what to move to next.

Skull sceptre FAQ

What does the Skull sceptre do?
Invoking it teleports you to the Stronghold of Security entrance in Barbarian Village and uses one charge. Divine shows how many charges you have left. The teleport works up to level 20 Wilderness.
How do you make a Skull sceptre?
Combine four pieces. The right skull half drops from minotaurs on level 1, the bottom of the sceptre from flesh crawlers on level 2, the top from catablepon on level 3, and the left skull half from ankou on level 4. Each piece has about a 3% drop chance.
How do you put the Skull sceptre together?
Use the left skull half on the right to make a strange skull. Use the top on the bottom to make a runed sceptre. Then use the strange skull on the runed sceptre.
How many charges does a Skull sceptre hold?
10 charges by default. Easy, medium, hard and elite Varrock Diary tiers raise that to 14, 18, 22 and 26. A new sceptre starts at the maximum your diaries allow.
What happens when the Skull sceptre runs out of charges?
The plain sceptre is destroyed. The imbued version, Skull sceptre (i), is not destroyed, and you can recharge it with bone fragments (one charge each) or with sceptre pieces.
How do you imbue the Skull sceptre?
Take it to Solztun with a pair of fancy boots, fighting boots or fancier boots, either worn or in your inventory. You need a Jagex Account or the RuneScape Authenticator set up. If you disable the Authenticator, the sceptre loses its imbue.
Can the Skull sceptre autocast spells?
Members can autocast Arceuus combat spells with it. It cannot autocast Crumble Undead, which only the imbued version can.
Is the Skull sceptre better than a Staff of fire?
As a plain weapon, no. A Staff of fire has the same +10 magic attack, a higher +10 magic defence and +6 strength, and it supplies unlimited fire runes. The sceptre is a teleport you also happen to be able to wield.
