Steel ring

“A very old enchanted ring.”

The Steel ring is a ring-slot drop from the Deranged archaeologist on Fossil Island. It gives +24 stab, slash and crush defence with no requirement to wear, which makes it the best-in-slot melee defensive ring. It gives no Magic defence, Ranged defence or Prayer bonus, so its use is limited to fights where melee damage is the threat.

Equipment bonuses

The whole ring is three numbers: +24 stab, +24 slash and +24 crush defence. Every other bonus is 0, so it does nothing against magic or ranged attacks and adds no offence.

How to get the Steel ring

The ring is a boss drop, and you can also buy it from the Grand Exchange. The kill itself has low requirements.

Ways to obtain it
Deranged archaeologist — the only source. The ring is his only unique drop, at 3/131. He is a combat level 276 boss at the south end of the Tar Swamp on Fossil Island.
Grand Exchange — it is tradeable, so you can buy one instead of farming the boss.

For the trip, use a Digsite pendant to reach Fossil Island and then the Mycelium Transportation System to the Sticky Swamp. You need an axe to cut the swamp vine in front of him. He can also be killed as an alternative on a crazy archaeologist Slayer task, unless the Wilderness is the chosen location.

Where the Steel ring is used

It is a defensive ring, so it fits fights where the damage arrives as melee. The Moons of Peril are an example, since they do not attack with other styles. It can also stand in on an early account that cannot afford a Ring of suffering.

It gives nothing against magic or ranged, so it is the wrong ring for a fight that mixes styles. Rings with offensive bonuses usually perform better, so treat this as a ring for tanking. See melee gear for the setups it sits in.

Steel ring vs Ring of suffering

The Ring of suffering is the all-round defensive ring. It gives defence against every style and a Prayer bonus. The steel ring trades that breadth for a bigger melee number: +24 to stab, slash and crush, which beats even the imbued Ring of suffering for melee defence.

So the choice depends on the fight. If you only need to survive melee, use the steel ring. If you take magic or ranged hits as well, the Ring of suffering covers more.

Steel ring FAQ

What do you need to wear the Steel ring?
Nothing. It has no skill or quest requirement.
Where does the Steel ring drop?
From the Deranged archaeologist, a boss at the south end of the Tar Swamp on Fossil Island. It is his only unique drop, at a rate of 3/131.
Can you make the Steel ring?
No. Unlike gold rings, it cannot be crafted with a ring mould at a furnace. It only comes from the boss drop or from another player.
Is the Steel ring better than the Ring of suffering?
For melee defence, yes. It ranks above even the imbued Ring of suffering against melee. The Ring of suffering still wins as an all-round defensive ring because it also defends against magic and ranged attacks and gives a Prayer bonus. The steel ring does neither.
Does the Steel ring protect against magic or ranged?
No. Its Magic defence, Ranged defence and Prayer bonuses are all 0.
Is the Steel ring good for offence?
No. It has no attack or strength bonus. Other rings with offensive bonuses will usually do better, and the steel ring is mainly a defensive pick for early progression and melee-only fights.
Is the Steel ring tradeable?
Yes. It can be bought and sold on the Grand Exchange.
Why does the Steel ring weigh so much?
It weighs 3 kg. It is tied with the granite ring as the heaviest item in the ring slot.
