Bryophyta Strategy Guide

Requirements - 1 x Mossy Key

Bryophyta is a free-to-play Moss Giant boss found within her lair in the Varrock Sewers.

A mossy key, acquired as a rare drop from regular moss giants (1/150 chance) is required to first access her lair, but it is not consumed on entry; re-entry is free. A key is instead consumed each time you open her reward chest.

Free-to-play players looking to kill Bryophyta will also need some sort of blade in order to cut through the thick webs of the Varrock sewers.

Bryophyta - Free-to-play Melee Guide

The Bryophyta fight is fairly simple, her main attack is magic based so you want to use the Protection from Magic prayer and any other offensive prayers you have available.

During the fight, Bryophyta will spawn three Growthlings. While these Growthlings are alive, Bryophyta is immune to damage so you must kill all three before switching your attacks back to Bryophyta.

To kill the Growthlings – you must attack them down to around 10% health and then use an axe or secateurs on them. If you don’t have an axe, there is one available to pickup from a pile of logs in Bryophyta’s lair.

Bryophyta Guide

Bryophyta, the Moss Giantess, is a moss giant boss who lives in her lair in the Varrock Sewers. She is a free-to-play boss with a combat level of 128, making her one of the few bosses members and F2P players alike can fight. She is aggressive and attacks on sight the moment you enter her chamber.

Bryophyta is most famous as the only source of Bryophyta's essence, the ingredient used to make Bryophyta's staff — a staff that can store nature runes and has a chance not to consume them when casting. The essence comes from a chest in her lair that you unlock with a mossy key. Because she counts as a moss giant, she can also be killed on a moss giant Slayer task. This guide covers how to reach her, the key requirement, her attacks, and the safespot strategy that makes her an easy F2P kill.

Requirements & where to fight

Bryophyta's lair is found in the Varrock Sewers, just east of the moss giants. There are three ways to reach the entrance:

  • Navigate through the Varrock Sewers on foot.
  • Use the level 51 Agility shortcut (an obstacle pipe) from the Edgeville Dungeon — members only.
  • Teleport directly outside the lair with a charged giantsoul amulet.

If you approach via the sewers, you will need a knife or a slash weapon to cut through a web blocking the path. The level 51 Agility shortcut bypasses the web entirely.

The one true requirement is the mossy key. A mossy key is needed to unlock the gate into Bryophyta's lair the very first time only — it permanently unlocks the gate and is not consumed when you do so. After that first unlock, you can re-enter and fight her without a key. As of the 25 June 2025 update, Bryophyta no longer requires a key to be fought; the key is only needed for that first permanent unlock and, separately, to open her chest. There is also a minimum HiScores killcount requirement of 5 kills before she appears on the boss HiScores.

Recommended stats & gear

Bryophyta is designed as a low-to-mid level boss, so her recommended stats are modest. These are recommendations, not hard entry gates — the only thing actually required to enter is the mossy key (first time) and a way through the web.

  • Melee: at least 50 Attack, 50 Strength and 50 Defence.
  • Ranged: around 60 Ranged, 40 Defence and 37 Prayer.
  • Magic: at least 59 Magic and 37 Prayer.

The standout fact is her 50% weakness to Fire spells. Combined with her low Magic defence, this makes magic the highest-DPS F2P style by a wide margin — Fire Blast under Protect from Magic is the recommended attack. Ranging her is the next-best option for mid-level F2P players. Melee works but is the least efficient because she also hits with Magic, and meleeing forces you out of the safespot.

For gear, think in terms of F2P-tier families rather than exact items. For magic, use the best available F2P magic robes with a Fire staff. For ranged, green d'hide armour, a coif, an amulet of power, and a maple shortbow with adamant arrows is the classic setup. For melee or general defence, green d'hide (for Magic defence) plus a rune kiteshield and rune full helm work well; Guthix-style god armour adds a small Prayer bonus over plain rune. Inventory & supplies

Bryophyta is a short, low-risk fight, so your inventory is light:

  • A woodcutting axe or magic secateurs — this is mandatory for dealing with her growthlings (see Fight mechanics). If you forget one, there is a pile of logs in the lair you can take a bronze axe from.
  • Food — her max hit is 16, so a stack of mid-tier F2P food (such as lobsters or swordfish) is plenty.
  • A knife or slash weapon to cut the web if entering via the sewers.
  • Mossy keys — one per chest opening if you intend to loot the chest for essence.
  • On members' worlds, bring poison protection (antipoison), because she can poison you.
  • Runes for Fire Blast / Fire Strike if going magic, or arrows if ranging.

Fight mechanics

Bryophyta has a max hit of 16 and 115 Hitpoints. She attacks with two styles and has one signature mechanic you must respect.

Magic and Crush attacks. She uses both a Magic attack and a Crush (melee) attack, at an attack speed of 6 ticks. Activate Protect from Magic before or immediately upon entering, before you open the gate. Because she is stationary and will not chase you, staying at range means she can only use her Magic attack — which your prayer blocks — so you take almost no damage.

Growthlings (the immunity phase). During the fight she can summon three growthlings. While any growthling is alive, Bryophyta is immune to all damage except poison and venom, so you must kill the growthlings first. They die in one hit, but only to a woodcutting axe or magic secateurs — the item must have the "Axe" attack type. A blessed axe, battleaxe, or zombie axe will not work despite being axes. She can only summon one batch at a time and has a cooldown between summons.

Poison (members only). On members' worlds Bryophyta can poison you, starting at 8 damage. Poison protection is advised even when praying, since prayer does not stop poison. On free-to-play worlds she does not poison at all.

Strategy / kill rotation

The clean F2P method is a safespot range or magic kill:

  • Enter the lair with Protect from Magic already on. She attacks on sight, so do not dawdle at the gate.
  • Stand at a distance where she cannot reach you with melee. She will not move toward you and will not use her Crush attack if you are out of reach — only her Magic attack, which your prayer blocks.
  • Attack with Fire Blast (best DPS, thanks to her 50% Fire weakness) or your ranged weapon.
  • When she summons growthlings, immediately switch to your axe or magic secateurs and one-shot each one — she is immune until they are dead — then resume your main attack.
  • Repeat until she dies. On death she drops giant bones on members' worlds — these cannot be picked up and are buried directly from the ground — while on free-to-play worlds she drops big bones as a normal pickup. You can then open her chest with a mossy key for the more valuable loot.

Note that she respawns roughly 9 seconds (15 ticks) after you attempt to open her chest, or on leaving and re-entering the instance, so you can chain kills quickly.

Notable drops

Bryophyta's everyday drop table is simple, similar to a regular moss giant's, but two things make her worth killing:

  • Bryophyta's essence — the headline reward, used to make Bryophyta's staff. It comes from the chest in her lair, which you open with a mossy key after each kill. Since the 11 May 2022 update, the essence can be obtained in free-to-play worlds, so the staff is fully F2P-obtainable.
  • Mossy key — she drops mossy keys at a rate of 1/16, increased to 1/8 while on a moss giant Slayer task, letting you keep opening the chest.
  • Giant champion scroll — the prestige rare, dropped at 1/5000, granting entry to a Champion's Challenge fight.

She also drops the usual F2P fare (rune/herb/seed/coin drops, gems) and a guaranteed ensouled giant head. The full rates are shown in the drop table above.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting an axe. Without a woodcutting axe or magic secateurs you cannot kill the growthlings, and you cannot damage Bryophyta while they are alive. Grab the bronze axe from the log pile if you forgot one.
  • Trying the wrong axe. A blessed axe, battleaxe, or zombie axe will not kill growthlings even though they are axes — you need an item with the genuine "Axe" attack type.
  • Standing in melee range. Step out of reach and she cannot melee you at all, cutting your damage taken dramatically.
  • Praying the wrong style. Use Protect from Magic; at range her only attack against you is Magic.
  • Skipping antipoison on members worlds. Protection prayers do not stop her poison, which starts at 8.
  • Expecting a key to be eaten on entry. The mossy key is not consumed when first unlocking the gate; keys are only used up opening the chest.

Bryophyta Guide — FAQ

Do I need a mossy key to fight Bryophyta?

You need a mossy key only the first time, to permanently unlock the gate into her lair — and the key is not consumed when you do this. After that first unlock you can fight her freely without a key. You do still need one mossy key each time you want to open the chest in her lair for the better loot.

What is the best way to fight Bryophyta in F2P?

Magic. Bryophyta has a 50% weakness to Fire, so Fire Blast under Protect from Magic gives the highest DPS for free-to-play players by a wide margin. Ranging her is the next-best option. Either way, stay at a distance so she cannot melee you.

Why can't I damage Bryophyta during the fight?

She summons up to three growthlings, and while any are alive she is immune to all damage except poison and venom. Kill the growthlings first with a woodcutting axe or magic secateurs (they die in one hit), then she becomes vulnerable again.

Does Bryophyta poison you?

Only on members' worlds, where she can poison you starting at 8 damage. On free-to-play worlds she does not poison at all. Because protection prayers do not block poison, bring antipoison if you fight her on a members world.

What does Bryophyta drop that makes her worth killing?

Her chest is the only source of Bryophyta's essence, used to craft Bryophyta's staff (which can store nature runes and sometimes avoids consuming them). She also drops mossy keys at 1/16 to keep opening the chest, and a rare giant champion scroll at 1/5000.
