Callisto Best in Slot Gear & Strategy Guide

Callisto Strategy Guide

Callisto is a Bear boss found in Callisto’s Den, a cave entered at around level 40 Wilderness (reworked 25 January 2023).

As Callisto is a Bear, Callisto kills will count towards a Bear slayer task.

Callisto is a boss often farmed for a chance at the Dragon Pickaxe or the Tyrannical Ring. He also has a few more worthwhile drops, like 100 noted Toadflax.

The most common tactic to use at Callisto is full Veracs as Callisto has extremely high melee defences. The Verac’s set effect gives you a 25% chance of ignoring this high defence – combine this with the fact that you can protect the full set by utilising the Protect Item prayer, and Veracs makes a perfect armour choice for this boss.

Callisto - Melee Veracs Guide

The overall strategy for the Callisto fight is pretty simple when utilising Veracs.

You want to use the Protection from Melee prayer in order to protect yourself from Callisto’s powerful melee attacks. Callisto has a knockback attack which you can mitigate by positioning yourself with a tree behind you. You simply then just have to keep your health high and be on the lookout for PKers as you finish the kill.

Callisto Guide

Callisto is an enormous bear empowered by the corruption of the Wilderness, residing in Callisto's Den. He is a combat level 470 boss with 1,000 Hitpoints, one of the Wilderness bosses reworked in the Rejuvenating the Wilderness update. He is killed for valuable uniques including the voidwaker hilt, claws of callisto and the tyrannical ring, of which he is one of only two sources.

The single most important thing to understand about Callisto is that he lives in the deep Wilderness in a multi-way zone, so you can be attacked by player killers at any moment during the fight. Do not bring anything you are not willing to lose. He primarily fights with crush melee that hits hard and shatters onto nearby players, and he has a knockback orb plus a bear-trap roar mechanic you must respect. He is weakest to Ranged, which is the standard method.

Requirements & Where to Fight

Callisto is found inside Callisto's Den in the deep Wilderness. The main page lists him at level 40 Wilderness, while the Strategies page describes the surrounding area as level 39 Wilderness – either way it is well past the point where you can be attacked by other players in a multi-way area.

To enter the lair you must have completed the medium Wilderness Diary tasks, OR be on a Callisto boss Slayer task. Note that a generic bear Slayer task does not bypass the diary requirement – it must specifically be a Callisto task. Entering also requires a fee of 50,000 coins, which does not need to be in your inventory and can be deducted straight from your bank.

The fastest approach is the Annakarl Teleport on the Ancient spellbook (requires 90 Magic), which drops you at the Demonic Ruins to the north; from there you run south. Other routes include a Waka canoe (57 Woodcutting), a games necklace teleport to the Corporeal Beast's lair followed by a run north, or the Wilderness Sword teleport to the Fountain of Rune for those with the Hard or Elite Wilderness Diary. On every route, watch for PKers on arrival.

Recommended Stats & Gear

The Strategies page suggests around 90+ Combat (95+ recommended), 90+ Hitpoints, 70 Defence for Rigour, 74+ Prayer, 90+ Ranged and 94+ Magic. Lower minimums (60 HP, 44 Prayer, 75 Ranged, 79 Magic) are workable but slower and riskier.

Callisto has very low Ranged defence and is dangerous up close, so Ranged is the meta style. The recommended approach is a high-Ranged-strength setup paired with magic defence and some tank pieces (such as a Dinh's bulwark slot) to survive PKers, plus a freezing weapon to keep the boss pinned. Magic is a viable alternative since he now has a 30% elemental weakness to Fire spells, so casting fire spells (such as the Fire spells on the standard spellbook) hits noticeably harder – but a Magic setup typically leaves you with weaker defences against PKers. Because death in the Wilderness means losing your gear, bring kit you can afford to lose – protect your most valuable items.

Rather than us listing exact items, plug your account into our Boss Gear Finder above for a Callisto loadout, and use the Ranged gear page to plan your ranged tiers. You can also check current prices on our GE price tracker before deciding what to risk.

Inventory & Supplies

Your supplies are built around staying alive while a freeze keeps Callisto in place. Core items the Strategies page recommends:

  • Freezing supplies – Blighted ancient ice sacks or Blighted entangle sacks to freeze and re-freeze him.
  • A boosting potion – a Divine ranging potion for the Ranged setup (or a Saturated/Imbued heart, Forgotten/Ancient brew or Divine magic potion for Magic).
  • Saradomin brews and Blighted super restores for healing and prayer, plus some prayer potions, with Blighted karambwan and manta ray for combo-eating.
  • Antidote++ to cure poison from the poison spiders on the way in.
  • A Stamina potion for running, a Looting bag, a Phoenix necklace, and a Royal seed pod (a level-30 Wilderness teleport if you are not wearing a glory).

Leave 2–3 inventory slots free for picking up loot.

Fight Mechanics

Melee swipe. Callisto's main attack is a crush melee swipe that deals massive damage, is extremely accurate, and has a maximum hit of 55 with a minimum of 35. It has AoE capability – it damages anyone near his main target and can hit diagonally. Protect from Melee only reduces this damage by about 50% rather than blocking it, which is exactly why melee combat against him is not advised and why freezing him at range is the standard plan.

Ranged attack. If Callisto cannot reach you in melee, he launches crescent-shaped projectiles at everyone in the den. This caps at 31 damage and is fully blocked by Protect from Missiles.

Knockback orb. Periodically he throws a white orb-like projectile that knocks the targeted player backwards and damages them if Protect from Magic is not active when it visually lands. It is single-target but has a 3x3 splash. Damage depends on how far you get knocked before hitting an object: 5 if you are pushed the full 3 tiles cleanly, scaling up by 15 per blocked tile, so 20 at 2 tiles, 35 at 1 tile, and up to 50 if you are directly against a wall or bear trap. Keep Protect from Magic ready and avoid fighting with your back to a wall.

Bear-trap roar. At 66% and 33% health, Callisto rears up, roars, and deploys red ghostly bear traps across the arena. Stepping on one deals up to 15 damage and briefly binds you. The roar also makes him glow red and break free of any freeze, so you must re-freeze him afterward; after the 33% roar, fresh traps keep appearing with his attacks.

Strategy

Players who enter the den spawn to the north; Callisto himself spawns to the south in front of the Escape Caves exit. If you want to avoid PKers, a common tactic is parking a second account outside the entrance to scout for threats.

Open by freezing him – the first immobilizing spell (such as Ice Barrage or Entangle) is guaranteed to land as long as he is not already frozen and your equipment has total Magic accuracy of 0 or greater. Binds after the first are not guaranteed. Once frozen, attack from a few tiles away with your Ranged weapon so he is forced into his weak ranged attack rather than his melee swipe. Keep Protect from Missiles up against that ranged attack, and flick to Protect from Magic the moment you see the white knockback orb.

When he hits 66% and 33% and roars, expect to re-freeze him and step away from any traps. Teams can speed kills by having a member cast Vulnerability (especially with a Tome of water) to drop his defence by 15%. If you are running low-risk gear, the Strategies page notes it is often better to die to Callisto than to run out through the Escape Caves: none of his common drops are individually worth over 100,000 coins, so you can reclaim them for free, only losing untradeables like the looting bag (protect the rares with Protect Item).

Notable Drops

Callisto's unique table is hit roughly 1/56.67 of kills, and at most one unique drops per kill. His marquee uniques are the voidwaker hilt (1/360), the claws of callisto (1/196), and the tyrannical ring (1/512). He can also drop the dragon 2h sword and dragon pickaxe, plus the Callisto cub pet at 1/1,500. The full drop table, with quantities and rates, is shown above.

Solo quantities are listed by default; in group encounters loot is split proportionally by damage dealt, with up to 10 eligible players per kill.

Callisto Guide — FAQ

What level Wilderness is Callisto in and what do I need to get in?

He is in Callisto's Den in the deep Wilderness – the main page lists level 40 and the Strategies page references level 39 for the surrounding area. To enter you need the medium Wilderness Diary completed, or a Callisto boss Slayer task, plus a 50,000 coin entry fee that can be taken straight from your bank.

What is Callisto weak to?

Ranged. Callisto has very low Ranged defence and hits hardest in melee, so the standard method is to freeze him and attack from range. He is no longer immune to Magic, so a Magic setup also works, though it usually leaves you more exposed to PKers.

How do the bear traps and the roar work?

At 66% and 33% health Callisto roars and scatters red ghostly bear traps across the arena. Stepping on one deals up to 15 damage and briefly binds you. The roar also makes him glow red and break free of your freeze, so be ready to re-freeze him; after the 33% roar, new traps keep appearing with his attacks.

How much damage does the knockback orb do?

It depends on how far you are knocked before hitting something. Off prayer it is 5 damage for a clean 3-tile push, rising by 15 per blocked tile, up to 50 damage if you are pushed directly into a wall or trap. Activating Protect from Magic before the orb lands stops it, so keep it ready and avoid standing against walls.

Should I run out or die when I'm done?

If you brought low-risk gear, the Strategies page recommends dying to Callisto rather than running out through the Escape Caves. None of his common drops are individually worth over 100,000 coins, so you can reclaim them for free on death – just make sure rares are covered by Protect Item. You will still lose untradeables like the looting bag.
