Chaos Fanatic Strategy Guide

The Chaos Fanatic is an insane mage demi-boss found within the deep wilderness, west of the Lava Maze.

With a combat level of only 202, the Chaos Fanatic is a low-level boss suitable for lower levelled players. His drop table is not particularly good apart from the Odium and Malediction shards, which themselves are now quite cheap.

The Chaos Fanatic has one particular attack which you need to watch out for. this is a green magical attack which will explode at your feet and deal AoE damage. When you see this attack incoming, you should run a few squares in any direction to avoid the splash damage.

The most common tactic to use at the Chaos Fanatic is to use a Ranged setup, making sure to only have a maximum of four expensive items to ensure you can keep them if you are killed by a PKer.

Chaos Fanatic - Ranged Guide

The quickest way to get to the Chaos Fanatic is to use either a Burning Amulet (Lava Maze) teleport or a Dareeyak Teleport on the ancients spellbook.

Whilst using the Protection from Magic prayer and staying at a distance, as long as you successfully avoid his green magic attacks you should take very little damage. Like most of the other Wilderness bosses, the main threat at the Chaos Fanatic is the threat of PKers. Always be on the lookout.

Chaos Fanatic Guide

The Chaos Fanatic is a relatively simple Wilderness boss that resides west of the Lava Maze in level 42 Wilderness, surrounded by miniature chaotic clouds that serve as unattackable scenery. He is a members target with a combat level of 202 and 225 Hitpoints, and his special-attack mechanic is similar to that of the crazy and deranged archaeologists. He attacks only with Magic for a max hit of 31, which Protect from Magic negates entirely, but two extra specials — one that disarms you and one that explodes on the ground — can wreck an unprepared trip, and you are doing all of this in the deep Wilderness where player killers are a constant threat. He is best killed with Ranged, and is notable for dropping the ancient staff and one of the three shards that form the malediction and odium wards. This guide covers how he attacks, the prayer and supplies that keep you safe, and the PKer-survival habits that keep your loot. For an exact loadout, use our Boss Gear Finder.

Requirements & where to fight

The Chaos Fanatic is a members boss. He is found west of the Lava Maze in level 42 Wilderness, so everything about this fight is shaped by being in deep Wilderness. He can also be assigned as a boss Slayer target — the Wiki lists him as assignable by Krystilia, Konar, Nieve and Duradel — and a kill grants 253 Slayer experience when done on task. He is aggressive and has a respawn time of 15.

The fastest way to reach him is by casting Ghorrock Teleport or using its magic tablet. Alternatively, a burning amulet teleports you to the entrance of the Lava Maze — run west from there — or players with the hard Wilderness Diary completed and a POH obelisk can take the level 44 Wilderness teleport.

The single most important thing to know: the boss himself sits in single-way combat, which means you are safe from player killers while in active combat with the boss. The danger window is between kills, while you wait for him to respawn.

Recommended stats & gear

The Chaos Fanatic is weakest to Ranged attacks, and because of his high magic level and defensive bonuses the Wiki's most effective strategy is to use Ranged while protecting from magic. That makes this a Ranged-first fight — lean on your best Ranged setup and see our Ranged gear guide for the item families that matter. The Wiki's suggested skills are Ranged 75+, Defence 70+ and Prayer 37+ (plus Magic 96+ only if you want to use Ghorrock Teleport).

Because you are in the Wilderness, gear choice is really a risk-management decision, not just a DPS one. The Wiki's blunt advice: do not risk more than you are willing to lose — only bring three or four valuable items and make the rest of your gear cheap and easily replaceable. It also flags that Ava's devices can be lost on death above level 20 Wilderness, so an assembler should only come if it is one of your protected items. For an exact item-by-item loadout tuned to him, use our Boss Gear Finder rather than risking a guess.

Inventory & supplies

Two supply choices here are not optional — they directly counter his two specials and the Wilderness setting:

  • Inventory-blocking food. The Wiki recommends Summer pies (or Wild pies) as the best food: they heal 22 per slot and, crucially, leave the pie dish behind in your inventory. Keeping every slot full is what stops his disarm special. Curry is an alternative — it heals less (19) but in a single bite.
  • Blighted super restores. The Wiki lists 4–6 blighted super restores; these work because you are in the Wilderness. Pair them with 2 divine ranging potions for damage.
  • At least two Ghorrock teleports — the Wiki warns that with only one, you are left with an empty inventory slot after using it, and the boss would then unequip your gear.
  • A Looting bag (recommended) and an optional emergency teleport (works only in level 30/20 Wilderness or below).

If you bring potions, turn off vial smashing in the gameplay settings — an empty inventory slot from a smashed vial is exactly what lets him disarm you.

Fight mechanics

The Chaos Fanatic has one basic attack and two specials. Handle them in this order:

Basic magic attack (max 31). His main attack is a basic red Magic projectile with a max hit of 31 and an attack speed of 2. Protect from Magic negates all of this damage, so keep it on the whole fight — this is the prayer that does the heavy lifting here.

Disarm special (two green projectiles). Periodically he casts two green unavoidable projectiles which disarm the player — like the chaos elemental, he can unequip your items. You cannot dodge these, but you can fully negate the effect by keeping your inventory completely full at all times: he has no free slot to knock your gear into. This is why inventory-blocking food (Summer pies) and disabled vial smashing matter so much.

Explosion special (the green AoE). Periodically he casts six slow-moving green projectiles in an arc toward you which explode on impact with the ground — this is the attack that can cause major damage if ignored. Unlike the crazy and deranged archaeologists, it is not preceded by a voice line, but it is slow and inaccurate, so it is easy to dodge by simply stepping forward / moving away from where you are standing. As of the 2 April 2025 update, this area-of-effect attack only affects the last player who engaged in combat.

Strategy / kill rotation

The kill loop is short and repeatable:

  • Turn on Protect from Magic before you engage and keep it up — it blocks his entire basic attack.
  • Attack with Ranged the whole time; he is weakest to it and his defences punish other styles.
  • Keep your inventory full so the disarm special has nothing to grab — eat Summer pies (the dish stays behind) and leave vial smashing off.
  • Step away when the green arc fires. When you see the six slow projectiles arcing toward you, move a tile forward so they explode on empty ground.
  • Top up with divine ranging potions and blighted super restores as needed.

Between kills, watch for PKers. You are only safe from player killers while in active combat (single-way). The respawn gap is when they strike. The Wiki's recommended escape is the Wilderness obelisk to the north (teleporting to level 13 Wilderness, then a normal teleport out), or running east into the King Black Dragon Lair, which is non-Wilderness, and teleporting from there. The nearby Chaos Temple altar to the south-west can recharge prayer but is itself a hot PKing spot.

Notable drops

The Chaos Fanatic always drops bones. His headline unique is the ancient staff (the Wiki lists it at 1/128) — he is one of the only monsters to drop it. He is also notable for dropping one of the three shards that form the malediction ward and odium ward: his Odium shard 1 and Malediction shard 1 are each listed at 1/256 for a specific shard (1/128 for any shard), with the crazy archaeologist and Scorpia dropping the other pieces. The rarest prize is the pet chaos elemental at 1/1000. He also drops a looting bag at 1/3, runes, gems and the rare drop table. The full table is shown above this guide.

Common mistakes

  • Fighting with an empty inventory slot. Any free slot lets his disarm special unequip your gear. Keep all 28 slots full — use Summer pies and turn off vial smashing.
  • Bringing only one Ghorrock teleport. Using it frees a slot, and the boss can then disarm you. The Wiki says to bring at least two.
  • Standing still through the green arc. The six exploding projectiles are easy to dodge by stepping forward — ignore them and you eat the big hit.
  • Over-risking your gear. This is deep Wilderness. Bring only three or four valuable items and make the rest cheap; do not risk more than you can lose.
  • Forgetting the PKers. You are only safe during active combat. Stay aware of nearby players between kills and know your obelisk / KBD-lair escape before you need it.

Chaos Fanatic Guide — FAQ

What style should I use against the Chaos Fanatic?

Ranged. The Wiki states he is weakest to Ranged, and because of his high magic level and defensive bonuses the most effective strategy is to use Ranged while protecting from magic. Suggested stats are Ranged 75+, Defence 70+ and Prayer 37+. Use our Ranged gear guide or the Boss Gear Finder for an exact loadout.

Which prayer do I use?

Protect from Magic. His basic attack is a red Magic projectile with a max hit of 31, and Protect from Magic negates all of that damage. Keep it on for the whole fight.

How do I stop him from unequipping my gear?

Keep your inventory completely full. His disarm special is two unavoidable green projectiles that knock your gear off — but only if there is a free slot for them to go to. Bring inventory-blocking food like Summer pies (the dish stays behind when eaten), turn off vial smashing, and bring at least two Ghorrock teleports so using one does not leave you with an empty slot.

Am I safe from PKers at the Chaos Fanatic?

Only while you are in active combat with the boss — he sits in single-way combat, so PKers cannot attack you during a kill. The risk is between kills while he respawns. The Wiki suggests escaping via the Wilderness obelisk to the north (to level 13, then teleport out) or by running east into the King Black Dragon Lair, which is non-Wilderness.
