Leather chaps are the starter legs for a new ranged account. They are free-to-play, need no level to wear, and give a small +4 ranged attack with a few points of melee defence and no magic penalty. They are cheap, easy to craft, and you outgrow them quickly.

Equipment bonuses

The numbers are small by design: +4 ranged attack, +2 stab, +2 slash and +1 crush defence. Magic attack, magic defence and ranged defence are all 0, so the chaps cost a mage nothing in accuracy.

How to get Leather chaps

These are one of the easiest pieces of armour to get. You can buy them, loot them, or craft them.

Ways to obtain it
Grand Exchange — the simplest route. The buy limit is 125 every 4 hours.
Ranging Guild store (members) — Aaron's Archery Appendages in the Ranging Guild sells them.
Crafting — use a needle and thread on leather at 18 Crafting for 27 XP per pair.
Beginner clue caskets — the chaps can appear in the reward casket from a beginner clue scroll.

If you craft them, on members worlds the chaps can also be combined with steel studs at 44 Crafting to make studded chaps, the next legs upgrade.

Who uses Leather chaps

They are worn mostly by low-level rangers. They give +4 ranged attack and a few points of melee defence, and that is all.

Because the magic attack bonus is 0, low-level mages also wear them for a little defence without a spell-accuracy penalty. For ranged training in the early game, pair them with an early bow from ranged gear.

Are Leather chaps worth it?

For a new account, yes. They are free-to-play, need no level, and cost very little. You will not keep them long.

Studded chaps (members) beat them on ranged attack and every defence bonus, but they have a -5 magic attack penalty and need 20 Ranged. Once you reach that level, swap up. The chaps' main edge is that anyone can wear them at level 1.

If you are comparing legs of many tiers side by side, the gear compare tool shows the bonuses in one table.

Leather chaps FAQ

What level do you need to wear Leather chaps?
None. There is no Ranged or Defence requirement, so a brand-new account can put them on straight away.
Are Leather chaps free-to-play?
Yes. They are not a members item, and you can trade them on the Grand Exchange.
How do you make Leather chaps?
Use a needle and thread on one piece of leather at 18 Crafting. Each pair gives 27 Crafting XP. On members worlds, a costume needle works too and does not need thread.
Where can you get Leather chaps without crafting them?
You can buy them from the Grand Exchange or from the store in the Ranging Guild (members), and they can drop as a reward from a beginner clue casket.
Are Leather chaps worth crafting for profit?
No. Crafting them loses money on each pair because leather costs more than the finished chaps. People craft them for the XP, or to turn them into studded chaps, not to make money.
What is the upgrade from Leather chaps?
Studded chaps are the next step. They need 20 Ranged and give +6 ranged attack, with much higher defence at +15 stab, +16 slash and +17 crush. On members worlds you make them from leather chaps and steel studs at 44 Crafting.
Do mages wear Leather chaps?
Low-level mages sometimes do. The chaps have a 0 magic attack bonus, so they add defence without lowering your spell accuracy. See magic gear for real mage legs.
Are Leather chaps good for Defence-restricted accounts?
They suit low-level accounts, because they have no Defence requirement. A pure that wants only a little ranged attack in the legs slot can wear them, though they give very little defence.
