The Magic sapling is the middle stage of a magic tree: it is made from a magic seed and planted in a tree patch at 75 Farming. It is tradeable, so you can buy it ready-made instead of growing it yourself. A planted sapling grows into a magic tree in 8 hours and gives a large Farming XP reward.

How to get a Magic sapling

A sapling is made, not dropped, and it can also be bought.

Ways to obtain it
Plant a magic seed in a filled plant pot with a gardening trowel in your inventory. That gives a magic seedling.
Water the seedling with a watering can, or cast Humidify. It becomes a magic sapling in one crop cycle, which is 0 to 5 minutes. This needs 75 Farming.
Grand Exchange — the sapling is tradeable, with a buy limit of 200 every 4 hours.

Saplings of tradeable seeds became tradeable on 29 January 2015, which is why you can trade this one.

What a Magic sapling grows into

Plant the sapling in a tree patch with a spade in your inventory. Planting gives 145.5 Farming experience. The tree takes 480 minutes (8 hours) to grow, and a fully grown magic tree gives 13,768.3 Farming experience.

You can pay the gardener 25 coconuts to protect the tree from disease while it grows, and the payment can be noted. Once grown, you can cut the tree down like a normal magic tree. Dig up the stump to get magic roots.

The number of roots depends on your Farming level: 1 at level 75, 2 at 83, 3 at 91 and 4 at 99. Paying Prissy Scilla to protect a magic tree is an elite task in the Western Provinces Diary, and getting at least three magic roots at once in Falador is an elite task in the Falador Diary.

Is a Magic sapling worth growing?

For Farming experience, yes. A fully grown tree gives 13,768.3 Farming experience, and it takes 8 hours to grow.

Whether to grow your own sapling or buy one is a price question. Compare the sapling's price with the magic seed's price in the GE price tracker to see which route is cheaper right now. Buying a sapling skips the pot and watering step. Making one yourself uses a seed and a plant pot.
