Spindel Strategy Guide

Spindel Guide

Spindel is a weaker variant of Venenatis, fought in the Web Chasm — a singles-plus combat area in level 29 Wilderness. She is a combat level 302 spider with 515 Hitpoints, and the fight is the easier, solo-friendly version of the Venenatis encounter: compared to Venenatis, the fight is easier and safer in return for lower drop quantities and rates. She is killed for valuable uniques such as the fangs of venenatis, the voidwaker gem and the treasonous ring.

Because she lives in the Wilderness, the biggest danger is rarely the spider — it is other players. You may be attacked by a player killer at any point during the kill, and items such as the dragon defender are permanently lost if not protected beyond level 20 Wilderness. The golden rule: do not bring anything you are not willing to lose.

Requirements & where to fight

Spindel is fought inside the Web Chasm, a lair in the ruins north of the Graveyard of Shadows in level 29 Wilderness. To enter her lair you must have completed the hard Wilderness diary, or hold a Venenatis boss Slayer task — note that a generic spider Slayer task does not bypass the diary requirement.

Getting there safely matters because the run is through the Wilderness. Common approaches are to use a Graveyard of Shadows teleport and run north, teleport to Ferox Enclave and run north, teleport to the level 26 Revenant Caves entrance with a revenant cave teleport and run east, or use a games necklace to the Corporeal Beast's lair and run north-west. One quirk to know: when any player enters the chasm, everyone inside is briefly unable to teleport — but this delay no longer occurs once you have completed the hard Wilderness diary.

Recommended stats & gear

Spindel is weakest to crush, and like Calvar'ion the meta is a melee setup built around crush damage. The strategy page suggests 70+ Attack, 70+ Strength, 70+ Hitpoints and 70+ Defence, plus 75+ Ranged if you choose to range her instead. She also has a 25% elemental weakness to fire spells, and is fully immune to poison and venom, so do not rely on either against her.

For melee, the strategy page calls the ursine chainmace the strongest weapon against Spindel; the general idea is a high-crush, high-strength loadout — your strongest weapon, your best defender, a strength-boosting amulet and your best strength ring — while keeping risk low, since everything you wear is exposed to PKers. Ranged is a strong alternative: the webweaver bow and Craw's bow both offer competitive damage despite her higher ranged defences, and ranging lets you stay closer to the exit if a PKer appears. Rather than list exact items here, plug your levels into our Boss Gear Finder above for a tailored loadout — and reduce risk to only what you can afford to lose. Bring defensive armour, especially against magic, because even a scouted player can be caught inside the cave.

Inventory & supplies

The strategy page's inventory is built around survival in the Wilderness, not just the kill. The core kit is a looting bag, a stamina potion for running, a (divine) super combat potion for melee or a (divine) ranging/bastion potion for ranged, blighted super restores, and an anti-venom or Sanfew serum to cure venom from PKers. Bring something to kill spiderlings fast — grey chinchompas, darts or throwing knives, or blighted ancient ice sacks, ordered fastest to slowest. A royal seed pod gives a one-click emergency teleport from up to level 30 Wilderness.

Fill the rest with food. If you are 93 or higher Hitpoints, blighted manta ray or blighted anglerfish are the better main heal, paired with several blighted karambwan for combo-eating. A useful detail: Spindel frequently drops large stacks of un-noted blighted food and potions that replace what you burn during the kill, so you can run lighter on supplies than at most bosses.

Fight mechanics

Spindel attacks every 4 ticks and can use all three combat styles, but only one at a time — and if you stand in melee distance she will only attack with melee. There are five things to manage:

  • Melee: she lunges at the player for up to 14 damage. This is the only normal attack she uses while you are in melee range. Use Protect from Melee when fighting her up close.
  • Ranged: she launches green spit at the player, hitting up to 31 — her hardest attack by far. When you are not in melee distance she opens with 8 ranged attacks, so flick the matching overhead (Protect from Missiles) while ranging.
  • Magic: she launches webs at the player for up to 24 damage. After the ranged volley she switches to 8 magic attacks, so swap your overhead (Protect from Magic) accordingly — the cycle then repeats.
  • Sticky web: she occasionally deploys a white-blue web at a target that expands into a 7x5 area. Standing in it deals rapid hits of 3 damage and drains 3 prayer and 10 run energy per tick — there is no protection prayer for it, you simply avoid it. Aranea boots only negate the first tick of web damage.
  • Spiderlings: she occasionally calls spiderlings to assist her. They drain prayer on every hit whether or not you pray against them, and if left alive they increase her damage and let her hit through prayers — again, no overhead stops them, you kill them. They have only 5 health and die in one hit to any style.

Strategy

Players who enter the arena appear to the north, so always keep an eye on the entrance for PKers and run or teleport out if needed. The fight follows a fixed pattern: Spindel uses 8 ranged attacks, then 8 magic attacks, moving position every 4 attacks, and this repeats until she dies. She spawns spiderlings on the 1st ranged attack of each cycle and deploys her sticky web on the 3rd magic attack — if you range her, position on the outskirt of the arena on that 3rd magic attack so you do not accidentally walk into the web.

Kill the spiderlings as soon as they spawn so they never empower her; a single chinchompa shot can clear several at once (and also chip her south-west tile), while darts or knives pick off stragglers, or a burst spell with blighted ancient ice sacks clears a cluster. Above all, avoid the webs — the run-energy drain is what stops you escaping a player killer, so treat the web as a bigger threat than Spindel's hits. Scout the entrance, enable PK skull prevention, and keep your risk low throughout.

Notable drops

Spindel's value sits on her unique table, which has a 1/103.12 chance to be rolled per kill (the effective chance for any single unique works out to about 1/224). The headline drops are the fangs of venenatis at 1/618, the voidwaker gem at 1/912, and the treasonous ring at 1/716, alongside a dragon pickaxe and dragon 2h sword both at 1/358. She always drops big bones, has a 5/9 (55.6%) chance to give a bonus supply drop on top of her normal loot, and rarely drops the Venenatis spiderling pet at 1/2800.

Common mistakes

  • Walking into the sticky web. Its run-energy drain is what gets you caught by PKers — there is no prayer for it, so position carefully on the 3rd magic attack and stay out of the 7x5 area.
  • Letting spiderlings live. They drain prayer regardless of overheads and let Spindel hit through prayer; kill them on spawn since they only have 5 HP.
  • Bringing poison or venom. Spindel is fully immune to both, so they do nothing — build your damage around crush instead.
  • Over-risking gear. This is a singles-plus area in level 29 Wilderness; untradeables like the dragon defender are permanently lost if unprotected, so bring only what you can afford to lose.

Spindel Guide — FAQ

What do I need to fight Spindel?

You need the hard Wilderness diary completed, or an active Venenatis boss Slayer task. A regular spider Slayer task does not bypass the diary requirement.

What is Spindel weak to?

She is weakest to crush, which is why the meta setup is melee built around a crush weapon like the ursine chainmace. She also has a 25% elemental weakness to fire spells, and is fully immune to poison and venom.

How do I deal with the spiderlings and the web?

Kill spiderlings the moment they spawn — they have only 5 health, die to one hit of any style, and if left alive they drain your prayer and let Spindel hit through prayer. The sticky web has no protection prayer; you avoid it by positioning on the outskirts during her 3rd magic attack, since its run-energy drain is what stops you escaping PKers.

Is Spindel dangerous because of PKers?

Yes — she sits in a singles-plus area in level 29 Wilderness, so you can be attacked at any time, and players enter to the north of the arena. Scout the entrance, enable PK skull prevention, carry a royal seed pod to escape, and bring only items you are willing to lose.
