Venenatis Strategy Guide

Venenatis is a Spider boss found east of the Boneyard in mid-wilderness.

As Venenatis is a Spider, Venenatis kills will count towards a Spider slayer task.

Venenatis is a boss often farmed for a chance at the Dragon Pickaxe or the Treasonous Ring. She also has a few more worthwhile drops, like 100 noted Snapdragons.

The most common tactic to use at Venenatis is full Veracs as Venenatis has extremely high melee defences. The Verac’s set effect gives you a 25% chance of ignoring this high defence – combine this with the fact that you can protect the full set by utilising the Protect Item prayer, and Veracs makes a perfect armour choice for this boss.

Venenatis - Melee Veracs Guide

The overall strategy for the Venenatis fight is pretty simple when utilising Veracs. First off, when she spawns you want to lure her into a multi-way combat zone – as Venenatis will only take partial damage while in a single-way combat zone.

You want to use the Protection from Magic prayer in order to protect yourself from her magic attacks and give partial protection from her web attacks. You simply then just have to keep your health high enough to avoid being one-hit by her powerful melee attacks, and watch out for PKers.

Venenatis Guide

Venenatis is a level 464 spider boss that resides in the Silk Chasm, a lair in the far east of the Wilderness at level 35. She is one of the reworked Wilderness bosses, with 850 Hitpoints and the ability to attack with all three combat styles. Because her lair sits in a multi-way Wilderness area, you can be attacked by player killers (PKers) at any time during the fight, so she is as much a test of nerve and escape planning as she is of DPS.

She is fought for her valuable drop table: a single kill can roll one of several uniques, including the voidwaker gem and the treasonous ring. She also makes a strong Slayer-task target, as a Venenatis boss Slayer task lets you skip the diary requirement and adds Slayer XP and bonus loot rolls on top of her normal drops. This is a lighter guide covering the essentials, with an exact loadout available from our Boss Gear Finder below.

Requirements & where to fight

Venenatis is found in the Silk Chasm, far east in the Wilderness at level 35. To enter her lair you must have completed the medium Wilderness Diary tasks, OR be on a Venenatis boss Slayer task. Note the qualifier: a plain spider Slayer task does not bypass the diary requirement — it has to be a Venenatis boss task specifically.

A dwarf multicannon cannot be set up in the Silk Chasm; if you try, the game tells you it does not seem safe to set one up here, so plan to do all your damage by hand. The fastest way to reach her is a Wilderness crabs teleport, which drops you at the dark crab fishing spot just south-east of the lair. Other options include Annakarl Teleport on the Ancient spellbook (into the Demonic Ruins, then head south-east) and a games necklace to the Corporeal Beast's lair followed by a run north-east.

Recommended stats & gear

The strategy page suggests 75+ Attack, 80+ Strength, 70+ Hitpoints and 70+ Defence as a floor, with 85+/90+/85+/75+ recommended for comfortable kills; 75+ Ranged if you intend to range her. The meta is built around two styles, and you should pick based on your gear and risk appetite, not mage her — her Magic defence is high and there is no magic equipment tab in the meta setups.

Melee is the highest-damage option. Like Vet'ion, she is weakest to crush, so the meta is a crush weapon with high Strength bonus paired with cheap, easily-replaced defensive armour (dragonhide is a common pick) because death in multi-way Wilderness is a real possibility. Lean on your Strength and Attack levels here. Ranged is a competitive alternative that lets you stand closer to the exit in case of PKers, at the cost of having to switch overhead prayers as her attack cycle changes; see our ranged gear guide for the families that work. For an exact, budget-aware loadout in either style, use our Boss Gear Finder — in deep multi-combat Wilderness the rule is to protect only your few highest-value damage items and risk as little else as possible.

Inventory & supplies

Because she is so deep in the Wilderness, supplies matter as much as gear. Bring a dedicated spiderling-killer — a Dinh's bulwark, grey chinchompas, darts/throwing knives, or blighted ancient ice sacks — to clear her minions fast. Pack a looting bag, a stamina potion (so you can outrun PKers), a combat potion for your style, blighted super restores for prayer, and blighted food (anglerfish or manta ray) with at least one blighted karambwan for combo-eating.

Crucially, also bring anti-venom or a Sanfew serum. That is not for Venenatis — she does not poison you — but to cure or prevent venom from PKers and from the poisonous spiders in the Escape Caves on your way out. She frequently drops large quantities of un-noted blighted food and potions that replace what you burn during the fight, so you can often outlast a long trip.

Fight mechanics

Venenatis uses one style at a time and moves position every 4 attacks. Her pattern is a long cycle: she opens with a run of ranged attacks (green spit), then switches to magic attacks (webs), repeating for the whole fight. Protection prayers fully block her attacks — but with an important catch, below.

  • Melee attack (max 21): any player standing adjacent to her is attacked only by melee, regardless of what style she is otherwise using. This is the lowest-damage position. Pray Protect from Melee when standing in close.
  • Ranged attack (max 35): her green-spit ranged hit, used against players out of melee range. Pray Protect from Missiles.
  • Magic attack (max 30): launched webs, the other out-of-range style. Pray Protect from Magic. Because she alternates ranged and magic, ranged fighters must watch the cycle and flick the correct overhead.
  • Sticky web (the "cocoon"): she periodically deploys a sticky web that expands into a 7x5 area-of-effect. Standing in it deals rapid hits of 3, drains your prayer by 3 and your run energy by 10. Avoid it at all costs — the run-energy drain is what gets you killed by PKers. You can position it safely by standing on the outskirt of the arena when it is due, so you do not accidentally walk into it.
  • Spiderlings & prayer-disable: she summons spiderlings to assist her. They drain 1 prayer on every hit whether or not they connect, and while they are alive they reduce the effectiveness of your protection prayers and let her hit through them — this is the real danger of leaving them up. They have only 5 Hitpoints and die in a single hit from any style, so kill them the moment they spawn. Keeping your prayer reliable depends on it.

Strategy & PKer risk

The kill is a rhythm: tag her, kill each pair of spiderlings as it spawns to keep your protection prayers working, flick the correct overhead for her current style, and stay out of the sticky web. In melee, stand adjacent so she only melees you for a max of 21. Use a Dinh's bulwark or thrown weapon to one-shot spiderlings without breaking your damage cycle.

The constant threat is other players. Her lair is multi-way and no longer below level 30 Wilderness since the rework, so you can be jumped at any moment. Do not bring anything you are not willing to lose — items like a Dragon defender are permanently lost above level 20 Wilderness if not protected. All players enter the arena from the north, so hang to the south as much as possible to keep an escape route open, keep run energy topped up, and bank often. If more than 10 players are in the lair she moves more often and specials more frequently, which is its own warning sign.

Notable drops

Venenatis rolls her unique table once per kill — at most one unique drops, and in group fights the recipient is chosen by damage contribution. The marquee uniques, with rates copied exactly from the Wiki drop table, are:

  • Fangs of venenatis — 1/196, her signature weapon component.
  • Voidwaker gem — 1/360, a component used to build the Voidwaker.
  • Treasonous ring — 1/512, the Wilderness-boss ring tied to Venenatis.
  • Dragon pickaxe and Dragon 2h sword — both 1/256.

She can also drop the Venenatis spiderling pet at 1/1500. Beyond the uniques her table is heavy with noted resources, runes, and blighted supplies. Check live prices on our GE price tracker before a trip to see whether a run is worth your time.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving spiderlings alive. They look harmless at 5 HP, but every one alive weakens your protection prayers and lets Venenatis hit through them. Kill each pair instantly.
  • Bringing anti-venom for the boss. Venenatis is not poisonous or venomous to players — that is leftover flavour from before the rework. Your anti-venom is for PKers and the Escape Cave spiders, not her.
  • Standing in the sticky web. The run-energy drain leaves you unable to escape a PKer. Pre-position on the arena edge so you never walk into it.
  • Over-risking your loadout. This is deep multi-way Wilderness. Protect only your top damage items and bring cheap replaceable armour.
  • Letting run energy hit zero. Without a stamina potion and a clear south-side exit, a single PKer ends your trip.

Venenatis Guide — FAQ

What do I need to fight Venenatis?

You must have completed the medium Wilderness Diary, OR be on a Venenatis boss Slayer task. A plain spider Slayer task does not bypass the diary requirement. She is found in the Silk Chasm at level 35 Wilderness, far to the east.

Is Venenatis weak to magic or melee?

The meta is melee or ranged, not magic. For melee she is weakest to crush, like Vet'ion. She does have a 40% elemental weakness to fire spells, but her Magic defence is high and there is no magic setup in the standard strategies — bring crush-based melee or a Wilderness bow instead.

Why do my protection prayers stop working?

Her spiderlings reduce protection-prayer effectiveness and let her hit through them while they are alive, on top of draining 1 prayer per hit. They have only 5 Hitpoints and die in one hit from any style, so kill each pair the instant it spawns to keep your prayers reliable.

Can I use a cannon at Venenatis?

No. A dwarf multicannon cannot be set up in the Silk Chasm — the game refuses, saying it does not seem safe. Plan to deal all your damage with your weapon and a spiderling-killer like a Dinh's bulwark.
