Fight Caves Strategy Guide

AKA - Jad

The TzHaar Fight Caves is an Old School Runescape challenge in which you must battle through 62 waves of monsters and then defeat the Fight Cave’s final boss – TzTok-Jad.

Completing the fight caves awards one of the best melee capes in the game, the [osrsbox name=”Fire Cape” id=”6570″ type=”bonuses”].

On release, the Fight Caves was for a very long time the most difficult challenge in Runescape. As time went on, new gear and more advanced tactics decreased the difficulty of the caves to the point that some veteran players can now complete the Fight Caves in under an hour using very few supplies, with powerful weapons like the [osrsbox name=”Twisted Bow” id=”20997″ type=”bonuses”].

The most common tactic for completion of the Fight Caves is to use Ranged. Generally, players with 75 Ranged and above should be able to complete the Fight Caves with a bit of practice and a [osrsbox name=”Toxic Blowpipe” id=”12926″ type=”bonuses”]. This is a good challenge for new players who are looking to try out PVM in Old School Runescape.

At least 43 Prayer is highly recommended for all methods of completing the Fight Caves, as the full set of Protection prayers will be needed throughout.

Jad - Basic Ranged Guide

Due to the variation in monsters throughout the 62 waves, you will at times need to use all different types of prayers and tactics to navigate through each wave efficiently and effectively.

The final wave – Wave 63 – will see you put up against TzTok-Jad, a giant level 702 behemoth capable of killing you with a single hit. The trick to killing Jad is to identify which attack is being thrown your way and use the correct protection prayer to prevent it. Jad’s attacks are easily identifiable both by the animation and the sound that they make. If you can identify the attack and activate the correct protection prayer quickly, Jad’s attack will always hit 0.

Once you’ve learned how to identify and pray against the specific attacks, the next step is dealing with the level 108 healers. These healers should be lured away from Jad one at a time and killed individually. Doing this whilst also praying correctly against Jad’s attacks is where a lot of players will die in the Fight Caves.

Refer to the attached Video Guide by Seerz for an in-depth explanation of each wave in the Fight Caves and the final boss – TzTok-Jad.

OSRS TzTok-Jad Guide: Fight Caves Capstone, Prayer Switching & the Fire Cape

TzTok-Jad — "Jad" for short — is the boss of the TzHaar Fight Cave and one of the strongest monsters in Old School RuneScape. He sits at combat level 702 with 250 Hitpoints, and his examine text says it all: "This is going to hurt...". Jad attacks with all three sides of the combat triangle — a Melee bite, a Magic fireball, and a Ranged boulder — and any of them can hit hard enough to one-shot most players: a max hit of 97 with Melee, 97 with Ranged, and 95 with Magic. He is encountered on Wave 63, the final wave of the Fight Cave, and this is the only place Jad can be found.

The Fight Cave is the capstone of the whole TzHaar Fight Cave run: 62 waves of progressively tougher monsters, fought solo, with no chance to restock supplies, all leading up to Jad himself. Beating him is far less about gear and far more about prayer switching — reading which of his three attacks is coming and flicking the right protection prayer before it lands. Win, and you walk out with the coveted fire cape, the long-standing badge that you have cleared the caves.

Requirements & where to fight him

There are no hard skill requirements to enter the Fight Cave, but Jad is a serious test of reflexes and supplies, so going in under-levelled is not recommended. The cave is fought entirely solo, and crucially you cannot restock between waves — everything you need has to be in your inventory when you start. You reach Jad only by clearing all 62 earlier waves first; he appears on Wave 63, the final wave, and nowhere else in the game.

Jad can also be a Slayer target. You can pay 100 Slayer reward points to have Duradel, Nieve, or Chaeldar add TzHaar to your assignment list, after which you may be offered TzTok-Jad as a task. Doing the cave on a TzHaar Slayer task lets you use an imbued black mask or Slayer helmet's bonuses on every monster in the cave, and rewards 25,250 Slayer experience for killing Jad himself (37,010 experience for the whole cave). Leaving the cave on task — manually or by dying — clears the task without resetting your streak.

Recommended stats, gear & supplies

The Fight Cave is most commonly done with Ranged, because it lets you safespot the earlier waves and fight Jad from a distance, which avoids his melee attack entirely and leaves you only the magic and ranged attacks to pray against. The wiki's Ranged-only suggestion is roughly 75 Ranged, 75 Hitpoints, 60 Prayer, and 70 Defence, though the cave is doable at lower levels with experience. Melee and Magic are also viable — melee is the fastest at the very top end but forces you to also pray melee, and magic benefits from Jad's 40% elemental weakness to water spells (so bring the strongest water spell you can cast) but is slower and pricier.

For gear, focus on a strong primary ranged style with good prayer bonus and ranged defence rather than chasing exact best-in-slot pieces — let our Boss Gear Finder above build your loadout. The toxic blowpipe is the standout single weapon for the whole run, and a twisted bow paired with it is excellent against Jad and the level-360 Ket-Zeks specifically; crossbows firing diamond bolts (e) are a strong, accessible alternative. Plan your ranged setup and check live prices on the GE price tracker before you commit.

On supplies, the recommended Ranged inventory leans on Saradomin brews (around 4–7) for healing plus super restores to top Prayer back up and counter the brews' stat drain, with a holy wrench or ancient mace as optional Prayer-saving tools. Bring plenty of ammunition — the wiki strongly advises checking your ammo before you start and entering with as much as you can, since a full run often runs well over an hour. Carry diamond bolts (e) or dragon darts specifically for Jad.

Fight mechanics: the three-attack prayer dance

Jad uses all three combat styles, and each attack has a tell you must read in time. When you fight from a distance — the recommended approach — he randomly alternates between only his Magic and Ranged attacks, so you are constantly flicking between two protection prayers.

  • Magic (fireball, max hit 95): Jad rears up on his hind legs and dangles his front legs for a moment before launching a fireball from his mouth. You must turn on Protect from Magic while he is rearing up — once he starts to breathe fire it is too late. Listen for the loud growl/inhale as a backup cue.
  • Ranged (boulder, max hit 97): Jad slams his front legs onto the ground and cracks appear in the floor; turn on Protect from Missiles the instant you see this, before the boulder falls. You cannot dodge the boulder by running, and the sound only plays after the hit registers — so the prayer must already be on.
  • Melee (bite, max hit 97): Jad only uses this when you are adjacent to him, and it is instant with no warning animation. If you ever stand in melee range you must keep Protect from Melee on by default and only switch off it to block an incoming magic or ranged attack. Staying at range avoids this attack completely.

Because the melee attack cannot be reacted to, ranged players keep the fight simple: stay back, and just alternate Protect from Magic and Protect from Missiles as Jad's emotes dictate.

The Yt-HurKot healers

When Jad drops to half health (below 150 HP), he summons four Yt-HurKot healers — small level-108 monsters with 60 HP — that latch onto him and heal him repeatedly, regenerating him endlessly until you deal with them. To stop a healer, you only need to tag it once so it turns its attention to you; you do not have to kill it. Get the attention of all four — leaving even one untagged can heal Jad back toward full.

Do not simply tank the healers, because any healer still in combat with you can still heal Jad if it is close enough to him. If they heal him all the way back to full, killed healers respawn the next time he reaches half health; if you tag them before that happens, killed healers will not respawn. The healers hit up to 14 with Melee, so keep an eye on your health, but the bigger danger is letting Jad reset — throughout the healer phase, switching prayers against Jad's own attacks still comes first.

Notable drops & the fire cape reward

Jad's headline reward is the fire cape — the prize for clearing the cave and the whole point of the run — handed over along with 8,032 Tokkul (16,064 with the Elite Karamja Diary). The fire cape is the coveted reward for clearing the cave and remains a meaningful milestone.

The rare drop here is the pet, Tzrek-jad, a miniature Jad. Its rate is 1/200 when you complete the cave off-task (or by sacrificing a fire cape to TzHaar-Mej-Jal), and 1/100 when Jad is killed on a TzHaar Slayer task. The drop table above is drawn straight from our data — use it for the full picture rather than tracking rates by hand.

Common mistakes

  • Reacting too late to Magic. Protect from Magic has to be on while Jad is still rearing up — if you wait until the fireball appears, you eat it. Listen for the growl.
  • Trying to dodge the boulder. The Ranged attack cannot be outrun. Pray Missiles when you see the floor crack; do not try to move out of it.
  • Standing in melee range without Protect from Melee. The bite has no warning and is instant. If you must be adjacent to Jad, keep Protect from Melee up as your default prayer.
  • Killing healers blindly. Tag all four Yt-HurKots first; killing them while one is still healing — or tanking them in combat — can let Jad regenerate to full.
  • Running out of ammo or supplies. You cannot restock mid-cave. Check your ammunition and bring enough brews, restores and ammo for a run that may last well over an hour.

TzTok-Jad Guide — FAQ

What level do I need to fight TzTok-Jad?

There are no strict level requirements to enter the Fight Cave, but the wiki's recommended Ranged-only baseline is around 75 Ranged, 75 Hitpoints, 60 Prayer and 70 Defence. Lower levels can clear it with practice, but it is not advised without experience — Jad's max hits of 95–97 can one-shot under-prepared players.

How many prayers do I need to switch between against Jad?

From a distance, Jad only alternates between Magic and Ranged, so you flick between Protect from Magic (he rears up and breathes fire) and Protect from Missiles (he slams his front legs and the floor cracks). If you fight in melee range you must also use Protect from Melee, because his instant bite has no warning animation.

What are the Yt-HurKot healers and how do I deal with them?

At half health (below 150 HP) Jad summons four Yt-HurKot healers that heal him endlessly. Tag all four once so they switch their attention to you — you do not need to kill them. Don't just tank them, since a healer still in combat with you can still heal Jad if it is near him, and leaving even one untagged can heal him back toward full.

What do I get for beating TzTok-Jad?

You receive the fire cape plus 8,032 Tokkul (16,064 with the Elite Karamja Diary). There is also a chance at the pet Tzrek-jad — 1/200 off-task and 1/100 on a TzHaar Slayer task. You can also get Jad as a Slayer task itself by paying 100 Slayer reward points to Duradel, Nieve or Chaeldar, which lets you use Slayer helmet bonuses across the cave and rewards 25,250 Slayer experience for the kill.
