Zalcano Strategy Guide

Requirements - Song of the Elves

Zalcano is a Mining boss located beneath Prifddinas, only accessible after completion of the Song of the Elves quest.

Zalcano’s prison can be accessed from Prifddinas’ Trahaearn district via a teleport platform just west of the south-eastern bank

It is recommended to have high Mining, Smithing, Runecrafting and Hitpoints levels in order to be effective at Zalcano. You should consider level 70 in these skills the minimum.

If you’re looking to take part in Zalcano content as a group, there are some unofficial Zalcano worlds assigned:

  • W 378 is currently the unofficial world for America.

Zalcano - Graceful Guide

Zalcano’s armour must first be removed before you can attack her with your Pickaxe. This is a relatively simple process which involves mining, smithing and imbuing Tephra.

In the room there are four glowing red rocks to mine. You should mine the brightest rock to mine the most Tephra. Fill your inventory with Tephra.

Next, take your Tephra to the furnace on the East side of the room and turn it into Refined Tephra.

Finally, take your Refined Tephra to the altar on the West side and turn it into Imbued Tephra.

Now that you have Imbued Tephra, you can use that as a weapon to throw at Zalcano and remove her armour. You do not need to equip the Tephra as it can be used from your inventory. Once Zalcano’s armour is gone she will drop to her knees and cower at which point you can attack her with your Pickaxe. Follow this process three times to defeat the boss.

Zalcano’s Attacks

While following the above instructions to kill Zalcano, watch out for her special attacks:

  • Boulders – Zalcano stomps her feet and boulders fall from the sky. Simply move one square away from the boulders to avoid this attack.
  • Demonic Symbols – blue and orange demonic symbols appear on the floor. Stand in the blue symbols while attacking with Tephra for a bonus. Avoid the orange symbols as they will damage you and drain your run energy.
  • Golem – Zalcano fires a red ball of energy which will land and turn into a Golem with hp. Kill the Golem before it reaches Zalcano else it will repair some of Zalcano’s armour.
  • Shockwave – when Zalcano arises after you have been hitting her with your pickaxe, she will send out a shockwave damaging nearby players and destroying your Tephra.
  • Pebbles – Zalcano shoots out pebbles to hit all players for a small amount of damage. This is unavoidable.

Zalcano Guide

Zalcano is a demon imprisoned beneath Prifddinas that is fought using skilling rather than conventional combat. She has a combat level of 336, but you never attack her with a sword or bow: she is immune to traditional combat damage, so you must use your Mining, Smithing and Runecraft to create imbued tephra and throw it at her stone armour, then finish her with a pickaxe once the armour breaks. Because of this, our Boss Gear Finder does not apply here — there is no weapon or combat loadout to optimise, only skilling and survival gear.

Zalcano is a group activity that almost any account with the requirements can join. Players are added to a shared instance, contribute damage to her 300-hitpoint armour, and everyone above the contribution threshold rolls for loot — including the coveted crystal tool seed.

Requirements & where to fight

Zalcano lives in the volcanic caverns beneath Prifddinas, and her prison is reached from the Trahaearn district via a teleport platform just west of the south-eastern bank. Because Prifddinas requires completion of Song of the Elves to access, Zalcano needs a minimum of 70 Mining and 70 Smithing to be fought. Higher levels in Mining, Smithing and Runecraft are advantageous, as is higher Hitpoints to survive her attacks.

The fastest way to travel there is a teleport crystal or its eternal counterpart. You can also take a spirit tree to Prifddinas, or use a teleport to house if your house is in Prifddinas. The official world for North America is World 378, and the official world for Germany is World 375. Ironmen are eligible for rewards when defeating Zalcano alongside other players.

Recommended stats & gear

This is a skilling boss, so the "meta" is weight reduction, run-energy restoration, prayer bonus and health regeneration — not damage. There is no melee or ranged loadout to build, which is why our Boss Gear Finder does not cover Zalcano. Focus on three item families instead:

  • Weight / run energy: the full Graceful outfit is the staple, giving high weight reduction and faster run-energy restoration.
  • Ore-doubling body: Varrock armour can give multiple tephra per mine action, speeding up your tephra supply. Wearing a prospector kit alongside it adds a little Mining experience, though gains here are fairly low.
  • Pickaxe: bring the best pickaxe you can wield. A better pickaxe mines tephra faster and adds damage when you mine Zalcano herself — a crystal pickaxe adds +2, a dragon or infernal pickaxe adds +1.

Prayer-bonus pieces (a god book, holy items, a Rada's blessing in the ammo slot) and health-regen gear like the regen bracelet and hitpoints cape are all useful for extending trips. Note that all of Zalcano's attacks are typeless, so protection prayers cannot reduce her damage at all.

Inventory & supplies

Keep it light. A typical setup is:

  • An eternal teleport crystal (or regular teleport crystal) to return to Prifddinas if you die — or set your respawn point to Prifddinas for free by speaking to Crefydd.
  • 1–3 stamina potions, though you may need fewer depending on your Agility level and team size.
  • Saradomin brews, summer pies, or the food of your choosing. If you pay attention to her attacks, you shouldn't need much food.
  • Several empty slots for tephra and loot. Some players carry a rune pouch to store rune drops and free up inventory for extra tephra.

Fight mechanics

Zalcano has six different attacks performed at random intervals, with a max hit of 53. Since protection prayers do nothing here, surviving is about positioning and reaction, not prayer-flicking:

  • Falling boulders: she stomps the ground and boulders fall from the ceiling. Watch for falling debris and shadows to see where they land, then step at least one tile away. A hit can deal 40+ damage.
  • Demonic symbols: blue and orange symbols spread around the room. Standing on a blue symbol while throwing imbued tephra increases your damage by 50%. Orange symbols must be avoided — they deal more damage the longer they have been active (up to roughly 26) and drain run energy.
  • Golem: she fires a ball of energy at a wall, summoning a golem that heals her armour by up to 50 hitpoints if it reaches her. The golem has 14 hitpoints; you can kill it by throwing imbued tephra, and it drops 16–24 imbued tephra when killed.
  • Rock blast: she fires energy at the current glowing rock formation to deactivate it. Standing within a tile of it deals 21+ damage (the strategies page lists up to 28), so walk away from the rock. A different rock starts glowing immediately.
  • Rise shock wave: after she falls and enough damage or time has passed, she rises again. Players standing next to her are pushed back, stunned, and take around 10 damage — and all imbued tephra in the room is destroyed.
  • Pebble barrage: she pelts every player with small pebbles for only about 5 damage. This one is unavoidable but harmless.

One extra danger: standing directly under Zalcano while she has fallen deals roughly 7–10 damage per tick, so mine her from beside her, never underneath.

Strategy / kill rotation

The kill loop has two stages: break her armour, then mine her. To break the armour you must make imbued tephra in three steps:

  • Mine the glowing rock formation in one of the four corners (non-glowing rocks give tephra far more slowly, so always use the glowing one). When she first spawns, the north-east corner has the highest chance of glowing.
  • Refine your tephra into refined tephra at the furnace on the eastern side.
  • Imbue it into imbued tephra at the altar on the western side, then throw it at Zalcano.

Each imbued tephra deals about 5 damage, or roughly 15 when you throw it while standing on a blue symbol — so saving tephra until blue symbols appear is far more efficient. Her armour has 300 hitpoints; to gauge how much each player needs to mine, divide 30 by the number of players in the room and round up. Once the armour is depleted she drops to the floor and you mine her directly with your pickaxe, chipping away at her 1,000 hitpoints. After a short time her armour resets to 300, a shock wave destroys remaining tephra, and you repeat the loop until her hitpoints reach zero. A team of 5 is the optimal size to kill her consistently in two phases while maximising loot, though skilled 3-man teams are also highly effective and give a better individual chance at the crystal tool seed.

Notable drops

You must do at least 2 damage to Zalcano's armour to be eligible for a drop, and 31 combined damage to be eligible for uniques and the pet. The headline reward is the crystal tool seed, used to make crystal tools. The fight also has a chance at an uncut onyx, the Zalcano shard, and the pet Smolcano. Every kill rolls a 1/200 chance to hit the crystal tool seed table; the seed itself is listed at 39/8000, the uncut onyx at 1/8000, the Zalcano shard at 1/750 (down to 1/1500 with lower contribution), and Smolcano at a flat 1/2250. Beyond uniques, every eligible player always receives crystal shards and the boss yields ores, bars and runes scaled to contribution. The full drop table is shown above.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to use protection prayers. Every Zalcano attack is typeless, so prayers reduce nothing — rely on movement instead.
  • Mining non-glowing rocks. They give tephra at a vastly reduced rate; always mine the glowing formation.
  • Standing under Zalcano when she falls. This deals ongoing damage every tick. Mine from beside her.
  • Mining too soon after she rises. The rise shock wave destroys all tephra, so wait for it before making more.
  • Ignoring orange symbols. They escalate quickly and can kill an inattentive player while draining run energy.

Zalcano Guide — FAQ

What level do I need to fight Zalcano?

You need to have completed Song of the Elves to access Prifddinas, plus a minimum of 70 Mining and 70 Smithing. Higher Mining, Smithing, Runecraft and Hitpoints all help.

Why can't I use combat gear or my Boss Gear Finder loadout?

Zalcano is immune to traditional combat damage. You deal damage by mining the glowing rocks, smithing and imbuing tephra to throw at her, then mining her with a pickaxe. Because there is no weapon or combat style to optimise, the Boss Gear Finder does not apply — bring weight-reduction, run-energy and pickaxe gear instead.

What is the best drop from Zalcano?

The standout unique is the crystal tool seed (used to make crystal tools). Zalcano can also drop an uncut onyx, the Zalcano shard, and the pet Smolcano at a flat 1/2250 for eligible players.

Do prayers help against Zalcano?

No. All of her attacks are typeless, so protection prayers cannot reduce the chance of being hit or the damage taken. Survive by stepping away from boulders, orange symbols and the glowing rock when she blasts it. A team of 5 kills her consistently in two phases, while skilled 3-man teams give a higher individual chance at the crystal tool seed.
