The Crystal shield is a degradable one-handed shield with the highest Ranged defence of any one-handed shield (+80), plus melee defences of +51 / +54 / +53. It needs 70 Defence, 50 Agility and the Roving Elves quest. Players bring it to long fights where damage arrives in more than one style, for example the Dagannoth Kings and the Inferno. It has no Magic defence at all.
Equipment bonuses
The shield gives +51 stab, +54 slash, +53 crush and +80 ranged defence. Magic defence is 0, and it carries a −10 magic and −10 ranged attack penalty, so it suits setups that do not rely on those styles for damage.

How to get the Crystal shield
You cannot buy this shield from other players. It comes from the elves' questline, and you pay in either coins or crystal shards.
Ways to obtain it
Roving Elves reward — the quest lets you pick the shield or the
crystal bow. The shield you receive this way starts with
500 charges instead of the usual 2,500.
Islwyn — sells the shield for 750,000 coins, even if you chose the bow as your quest reward. You do not need a seed.
Singing bowl in Prifddinas — combine a crystal weapon seed with 40 crystal shards. It needs 78 Smithing and 78 Crafting and completion of Song of the Elves. Without the levels, a nearby elf will do it for 20 extra shards.
Ilfeen — turns a crystal weapon seed back into a shield for coins. The first re-enchant costs 750,000 coins and each later one is 150,000 cheaper, down to a floor of 150,000.
The Ilfeen price depends on how many seeds she has re-enchanted for you in total, across the shield, bow and halberd, not only the shield.
Where the Crystal shield is used
The +80 ranged defence and 51 to 54 melee defences make it a damage sponge for long encounters with mixed attack styles. Players use it at the Dagannoth Kings and the Moons of Peril, and in later content such as the Inferno and the Fortis Colosseum, where it is a common pick for players still learning the fight.
It has gaps. There is no Magic defence, so you rely on Protect from Magic or a gear switch when magic hits arrive. It also takes the shield slot, which blocks a Dragon defender and most bows. The Toxic blowpipe is two-handed, so a shield cannot be worn with it.
Charges: a shield starts with 2,500 charges and loses one per non-zero hit while worn. Crystal shards recharge it at 100 charges each, up to a maximum of 20,000. At zero it becomes inactive and has no stats.
Crystal shield vs the other tank shields
For raw damage soak, the best damage soak comes from the Elysian spirit shield and Dinh's bulwark. The crystal shield trades some of that for cost and flexibility: it is far cheaper than the Elysian, and unlike the bulwark it leaves your weapon hand free.
Its melee defences are about the same as a Dragon square shield, and its ranged defence is higher than any other one-handed shield. If your fight is mostly magic, look at other options, because this shield gives nothing against it.
Crystal shield FAQ
What do you need to wield the Crystal shield?
70 Defence and 50 Agility, and you must have completed the Roving Elves quest.
How do you get the Crystal shield?
You can take it as a reward for Roving Elves (it starts with only 500 charges that way), buy one from Islwyn, or make one at a singing bowl in Prifddinas from a crystal weapon seed and 40 crystal shards. The Ilfeen route turns a seed back into a shield for a coin fee.
Does the Crystal shield degrade?
Yes. A shield starts with 2,500 charges and loses one for every hit that does damage while you wear it. At zero charges it goes inactive and loses its stats until you recharge it with crystal shards or turn it back into a seed.
Can you trade the Crystal shield?
No. It is untradeable, so there is no Grand Exchange price to check. You get it from the quest, Islwyn or the crafting route.
Crystal shield or Elysian spirit shield?
The Elysian spirit shield is one of the best shields for soaking damage, but the Crystal shield costs far less to get and run. Treat the crystal shield as the cheaper step, not a replacement.
Does the Crystal shield have Magic defence?
No. Its Magic defence is 0, and it has small Magic and Ranged attack penalties. Against magic attacks you rely on Protect from Magic, or you switch to different gear.
Can you use a Dragon defender or a Toxic blowpipe with it?
No. It sits in the shield slot, so a Dragon defender cannot be worn with it, and it rules out most Ranged weapons such as bows. The Toxic blowpipe is two-handed, so a shield cannot be worn with it.
What happens to the Crystal shield when you die?
Since 13 March 2014, crystal equipment reverts to a seed when it is dropped on death. To get a shield again, buy a new one from Islwyn, pay Ilfeen to re-enchant the seed, or craft it from the seed with crystal shards.
