About herb runs
A herb run is a Farming loop: you plant herb seeds in your herb patches, do something else for about 80 minutes while they grow, then pick the grimy herbs and sell or use them. Each seed has a number of harvest lives set by your compost, and every pick has a chance to save a life, which rises with your Farming level, magic secateurs, the Farming cape and some diaries. Disease can kill a patch unless it is protected. This calculator compares every herb's average profit and XP per run for your level and patches, at GE prices with their time, after the GE tax.
Compost, secateurs, diaries and disease
Compost sets the harvest lives: 3 with none, 4 with compost, 5 with supercompost and 6 with ultracompost. It also lowers disease: each of the three growth stages has a 27/128 chance with no compost, 14/128 with compost, 6/128 with supercompost and 3/128 with ultracompost. Magic secateurs add 10% to the chance to save a life and the Farming cape adds 5% at level 99.
Two diaries matter here, and they do different things. The Kourend & Kebos Easy Diary makes the Hosidius patch disease-free. The Kourend & Kebos Hard Diary gives more herbs at Hosidius and the Farming Guild. The Kandarin Diary gives more herbs at Catherby. Troll Stronghold, Weiss and Harmony Island are always disease-free, and Civitas illa Fortis is disease-free at Champion rank.
What this run does not count
- Travel and run time. No gp per hour.
- Curing. A diseased patch counts as dead.
- Attas and Iasor anima plants, Resurrect Crops and the bottomless compost bucket.
- Cleaning herbs and Herblore XP. Herbs are sold grimy.
- Goutweed (no GE price).
- Which patches you have unlocked. Turn off any patch you don't have.
How this is worked out
- Each seed gives 3 harvest lives plus 1 per compost tier. Herbs per patch = lives ÷ (1 − chance to save). Farming (OSRS Wiki, rev 15366981).
- Chance to save uses the game's rounding since December 2023. The Wiki herb calculator still uses the older rule, so its yields can be up to about 1.5% lower.
- Disease: 3/128 per growth stage with ultracompost, 3 stages. Disease (Farming) (rev 15215319).
- Hosidius: disease-free with Kourend & Kebos Easy; +10 to both chance-to-save constants with Kourend & Kebos Hard. The Farming Guild gets the same +10 with Hard.
- Diary boost: added as a whole number to the chance to save (a Jagex developer, 2023). An older Jagex statement describes a percentage. This page may be up to 11.6% high on diary patches.
- Huasca's low chance-to-save constant (58) is the Wiki's own estimate.
- Planting XP is paid on every patch, including one that dies (game update, 3 June 2026). Compost XP is counted per patch.
- Prices: seeds and compost at each item's instant-buy price, herbs at instant-sell less the 2% GE tax. Each price shows its own last trade time. A price with no trade in 48 hours is not used. The Wiki herb calculator leaves out the GE tax, so our profit is about 2% lower.
- Yield is an average. A single run can give more or fewer herbs.
