Rune mace

“A spiky mace.”

The Rune mace is the free-to-play melee weapon with a Prayer bonus. It requires 40 Attack, swings at 4 ticks (2.4s) since its 2021 speed buff, and carries +4 Prayer alongside a solid +39 crush and +36 strength. That combination makes it the standard choice for prayer-heavy free-to-play setups where a scimitar's raw damage is not the only consideration.

Equipment bonuses

The mace is a crush weapon: +39 crush attack and +36 strength, with a useful +20 stab as a secondary option and a negative slash bonus you should ignore. The +4 Prayer bonus is the stat no other free-to-play weapon at this level offers.

How to get a Rune mace

Two shops sell it outright, and it is smithable at high level.

Ways to obtain it
Scavvo's Rune Store — in the Champions' Guild, for 14,400 coins. You need 32 quest points to get into the guild.
Spike's Spikes — in Outer Fortis, for 18,720 coins. More expensive, but it only requires access to Varlamore.
Smithing — 87 Smithing and one rune bar makes one. At that level buying is normally cheaper, so this is for the XP or for an Ironman.
Grand Exchange — tradeable, buy limit 70 every 4 hours.

Once you have one, it is also the base for the bone mace: combine it with Scurrius' spine on an anvil at 35 Smithing, or pay Historian Aldo 50,000 coins to do it.

Is the Rune mace worth it?

In free-to-play it earns its place. The +4 Prayer bonus is not available on any other weapon at this level, and since the 2021 buff to a 4-tick swing it no longer gives up damage for it. For prayer-reliant free-to-play combat it is the pick.

Straight damage is a different question. The Rune scimitar is cheaper, attacks on slash — which far more monsters are weak to — and out-performs the mace against most targets. Take the mace for crush-weak enemies or when you want the Prayer bonus.

On a members account it is a stepping stone only. A Dragon scimitar at 60 Attack, and later an Abyssal whip, replace it outright.

What can you make with a Rune mace?
Combining it with Scurrius' spine on an anvil with a hammer creates the bone mace, at 35 Smithing. Historian Aldo will do it for you for 50,000 coins.
Is the Rune mace worth it?
In free-to-play, yes — it is cheap and the Prayer bonus is unique at that level. On a members account it is quickly outclassed; a Dragon scimitar or Abyssal whip replaces it.
