The Blood Moon chestplate is a tradeable melee body from the Moons of Peril, added with Varlamore. It needs 75 Strength and 50 Defence, gives +4 strength like a fighter torso, and degrades with use. It is also the body piece of the Blood Moon set, which speeds up the dual macuahuitl.

Equipment bonuses

The body is built around strength and magic protection. It gives +4 melee strength with +60 stab, +80 slash and +80 crush defence, plus +79 ranged defence. Its +40 magic defence is the unusual number for a melee body. The cost is −15 magic attack and −10 ranged attack.

How to get the Blood Moon chestplate

It is a boss-style reward, not a shop item.

Ways to obtain it
Lunar Chest — found in the Ancient Shrine within Neypotzli. You can open it once you have defeated at least one of the Moons of Peril, and all three must be beaten once to unlock it the first time. Beating the Blood Moon gives a 1/56 chance at a piece of its armour, and each piece is a 1/224 roll per opening.
No repeat pieces early on — the chest will not give you a second copy of a set piece until you have received every piece in that set once.
Grand Exchange — the new version is tradeable, with a buy limit of 15 every 4 hours.

Completing all three Moon sets takes around 320 chest openings on average.

Using the Blood Moon chestplate

This is a strength body for melee fights where you want damage and some magic protection. It is used for Slayer training and for melee strategies at bosses such as General Graardor, Zulrah and Kalphite Queen.

The other two pieces of the set are the helm and the Blood Moon tassets. Wearing all three with the dual macuahuitl gives the Bloodrager effect.

The armour degrades. Plan for a repair bill after roughly 45 hours of combat. It can be cheaper to buy a replacement than to repair a broken one.

Blood Moon chestplate against its alternatives

Three bodies share the same +4 strength: the Blood Moon chestplate, the fighter torso and the Bandos chestplate. They differ in what else you get and what they cost to own.

The fighter torso needs 40 Defence and costs no coins, but it has −10 magic defence and cannot be traded. The Bandos chestplate has much higher melee and ranged defence, but needs 65 Defence and has weak magic defence. The Blood Moon chestplate needs less Defence than Bandos and has more magic defence than either.

Blood moon chestplate FAQ

What level do you need for the Blood Moon chestplate?
75 Strength and 50 Defence. The Strength requirement is the higher one.
How do you get the Blood Moon chestplate?
It drops from the Lunar Chest in the Ancient Shrine in Neypotzli, after you defeat the Moons of Peril. The chest gives it at 1/224 per opening. You can also buy one on the Grand Exchange.
Does the Blood Moon chestplate degrade?
Yes. It starts with 3,000 charges and loses one for every 54 seconds you spend in combat, so it lasts about 45 hours of continuous combat before it breaks. A broken piece can still be traded.
How much does it cost to repair?
A fully broken piece costs 1,500,000 coins to repair with an NPC such as Bob or Dunstan. At an armour stand you get a discount of 7,500 coins per visible Smithing level, which takes the price down to 757,500 coins at level 99.
Blood Moon chestplate or Fighter torso?
The strength bonus is the same at +4. The chestplate needs 50 Defence against the Fighter torso's 40, but it has +40 magic defence where the torso has −10, and you can trade it. The torso is not tradeable and comes from Barbarian Assault points, not coins.
Blood Moon chestplate or Bandos chestplate?
Both give +4 strength. The Bandos chestplate has higher stab, slash, crush and ranged defence and a +1 Prayer bonus, but it needs 65 Defence and has only −6 magic defence. The Blood Moon body has the better magic defence and needs less Defence.
What is the Blood Moon set effect?
With the full Blood Moon set on and a Dual macuahuitl in hand, you get the Bloodrager effect. Each successful hit has a 33% chance to make your next attack come one tick sooner, and the weapon's special attack guarantees it. The effect can still trigger when a set piece is broken.
Can you trade a Blood Moon chestplate after wearing it?
The new and the broken versions are tradeable. The used version, which you hold once you have worn it, is not.
