King Black Dragon Strategy Guide

AKA - KBD

The King Black Dragon is a Black Dragon boss found within the King Black Dragon’s lair in the wilderness. Whilst the entrance to the lair is found within the wilderness, the lair itself is not considered wilderness and you are therefor safe from other players within it.

As the King Black Dragon is a Black Dragon, killing him will count towards a Black Dragon slayer task.

The King Black Dragon was the first boss monster to be added to the game, way back in Runescape classic. It was often killed by players who were hunting the famed Dragon Med Helm, however, players nowadays often kill the KBD for the chance at the KBD Heads, which allow you to re-colour the slayer helm to black, and also the Prince Black Dragon pet.

Players often use either Ranged or Melee at the KBD as viable methods to efficiently kill him.

KBD - Basic Melee Guide

The King Black Dragon uses multiple different Dragon Breath special attacks with differing effects. A Dragonfire Shield or Anti-dragon Shield will reduce the damage of these special attacks by 75% and is highly recommended. You can reduce the damage of these attacks even further by drinking an Antifire potion. This will reduce the damage dealt by the Dragon Breath special attacks to be no more than 10.

If you combine the above with the Protection from Melee prayer to protect you from 100% of the KBD’s melee attacks, you will only take a small amount of damage from the KBD’s Dragon Breath attacks.

Poison Breath (Green)

This attack will poison you, which is why you should bring either a Super Antipoison potion or wear a Serpentine Helmet (off-task)

Shock Breath (Blue)

This attack will slowly lower all of your stats. This is not much of a problem with melee as your stats will be restored and raised when using your Super Combat potion.

Freeze Breath (White)

This attack will freeze you in place for 10 seconds, making you unable to move or attack. You should use this opportunity while frozen to eat up and drink any potions you may need to drink.

Equipment / Inventory Notes:

If you don’t mind risking the extra item on your way to the KBD lair, you could bring a Special Attack weapon – even a cheap one like a DDS if you wished.

KBD - Basic Ranged Guide

The King Black Dragon uses multiple different Dragon Breath special attacks with differing effects. A Dragonfire Wardor Anti-dragon Shield will reduce the damage of these special attacks by 75% and is highly recommended. You can reduce the damage of these attacks even further by drinking an Antifire potion. This will reduce the damage dealt by the Dragon Breath special attacks to be no more than 10.

While ranging, you can avoid 100% of his melee attacks by staying at a distance, but this means he will be using more special attacks and you’ll therefore be taking more damage than a player using melee. There is no need for you to use any protection prayers while ranging.

Poison Breath (Green)

This attack will poison you, which is why you should bring either a Super Antipoison potion or wear a Serpentine Helmet (off-task)

Shock Breath (Blue)

This attack will slowly lower all of your stats. This is not much of a problem with range if you’re using Bastion Potions. However, if you’re using regular Ranging potions you may want to bring a Super Restore potion to bring your defence back up.

Freeze Breath (White)

This attack will freeze you in place for 10 seconds, making you unable to move or attack. You should use this opportunity while frozen to eat up and drink any potions you may need to drink.

King Black Dragon Guide

The King Black Dragon (KBD) is a three-headed dragon located in his lair, accessible only through the deep Wilderness. With a combat level of 276, he is one of the strongest dragons in Old School RuneScape and was once the strongest monster in the game. His lair is a multicombat area, but although it sits at the edge of the Wilderness the lair itself is not Wilderness, so players cannot attack each other and there are no teleport restrictions inside.

The KBD has 240 Hitpoints and attacks with melee and four kinds of dragonfire breath, so an anti-dragon shield plus an antifire potion is essential before you engage. He also counts toward a black dragon Slayer task, except when the task is assigned by Krystilia.

Requirements & where to fight

There are no strict requirements to kill the King Black Dragon, but the Wiki advises high combat stats. For melee it recommends 80+ Attack and Strength, 70+ Hitpoints, and 70+ Prayer for Piety. For ranged it recommends 80+ Ranged, 70+ Hitpoints, and 74+ Prayer for Rigour. Partial completion of Dragon Slayer I is needed for access to anti-dragon shields, and Slug Menace gives access to proselyte armour.

He resides in the King Black Dragon Lair, which you reach by travelling through the Wilderness. The fastest and most reliable route is a burning amulet teleport to the Lava Maze, then run to the fenced entrance, through the gate and down the ladder. Other routes include the Ghorrock Teleport to the Frozen Waste Plateau, a player-owned house obelisk set to level 44 (requires the hard Wilderness Diary), or a waka canoe from Edgeville. At the bottom, pull the lever to enter the lair.

Warning: you must cross deep Wilderness (around level 42-44) commonly patrolled by player killers, so only bring items you are willing to lose. If you die on the way, only your three most valuable items are kept (four with Protect Item active, none if skulled).

Recommended stats & gear

The KBD can be killed with melee, ranged, or even an AFK magic setup, so the meta is flexible. Most players fight him in melee distance while praying Protect from Melee, which also lowers how often he uses his special dragonfire breaths. The Wiki's melee loadout style centres on a dragon hunter lance (KBD is a draconic creature, weak to dragonbane weapons) with a dragonfire shield, while ranged setups built around a twisted bow or dragon hunter crossbow are also strong. Note that since the 2024 rebalance he has a 50% weakness to water spells, which mages can exploit.

Because everything you bring risks the Wilderness, the standard advice is to use cheaper "risk" gear (mixed hide armour, an anti-dragon shield) rather than your absolute best-in-slot. We deliberately do not list exact items here, since the right pieces depend on your budget and stats - use our Boss Gear Finder above to build a loadout you can actually afford to lose.

Inventory & supplies

Your supplies are built around staying alive through the dragonfire. The Wiki's recommended inventory carries:

  • Antifire protection: an extended antifire potion (or extended super antifire) - with an anti-dragon shield this blocks his regular dragonfire entirely.
  • Antidote++ to cover the poison from his toxic breath.
  • A combat or ranging potion to boost damage (super combat for melee, ranging potion for ranged).
  • A balance of super restore potions and food (cheap food such as dark crab) - enough to last one trip.
  • A teleport to the lair (a burning amulet works for both travel and resupply) and a teleport to house tablet to leave safely at the end.

Because the instance collapses if you die, an emergency teleport is strongly recommended so unprotected items go to your gravestone rather than being lost outright.

Fight mechanics

The King Black Dragon attacks with melee and dragonfire. When you are in melee range he has a 1/3 chance to use melee, a 1/3 chance for normal fiery breath, and 1/3 to use one of the special breaths; standing in melee distance therefore reduces how often the dangerous specials fire.

  • Melee (max 25): a stab attack used only when you stand in melee range. Protect from Melee negates all of its damage, which is why melee distance is the recommended position.
  • Fiery dragonfire (up to 65): his strongest breath. An antifire shield, antifire potion, or Protect from Magic - or a combination - partially negates it. With an anti-dragon shield plus an antifire potion his regular dragonfire is fully blocked.
  • Icy breath (up to 50, freeze): a special dragonfire that can freeze you for 10 ticks (6 seconds).
  • Toxic breath (up to 50, poison): a special dragonfire that can inflict poison starting at 8 damage - bring antidote++.
  • Shocking breath (up to 50, stat drain): a special dragonfire that drains all your stats by 2.

The three special breaths are equally common and each has a chance to apply its effect on hit. Crucially, an antifire shield and Protect from Magic reduce the special dragonfire damage to about 10 and cut the effect chance to 1 in 8 for a well-protected player.

Strategy & common mistakes

The standard kill is simple: stand in melee distance, pray Protect from Melee, keep your antifire active, and attack until he dies (240 Hitpoints). Protect from Melee blocks all melee damage and reduces how often he uses the unblockable special breaths. If you fight with a two-handed weapon such as a twisted bow, pray Protect from Magic instead to soften the dragonfire, since you cannot equip an anti-dragon shield. Advanced players using a twisted bow, dragon hunter crossbow, or Osmumten's fang can use the "walk-under" method to cut damage by about 20%.

Common mistakes:

  • Forgetting antifire - without an anti-dragon shield and antifire potion, a single fiery breath can hit 65.
  • Letting your antifire potion run out mid-trip; reapply before it expires.
  • Bringing items you cannot afford to lose into the Wilderness, where PKers patrol the approach.
  • Standing out of melee range, which increases the rate of special dragonfire attacks.

Notable drops

Every kill always drops 1 dragon bones and 2 black dragonhide. His marquee rewards, all sourced from the Wiki drop table, are the Dragon pickaxe (1/1000), the Dragon med helm (1/128), the Kbd heads (1/128), and the rare Draconic visage (1/5000). He also has a 1/3000 chance to drop the Prince black dragon pet. Counting him as a black dragon Slayer task can add a Brimstone key when assigned by Konar.

King Black Dragon Guide — FAQ

What do I need to kill the King Black Dragon?

There are no strict requirements, but you should bring an anti-dragon shield and an antifire potion, which together block his regular dragonfire. Access to anti-dragon shields requires partial completion of Dragon Slayer I. The Wiki recommends 80+ melee stats (or 80+ Ranged) with 70+ Hitpoints and 70-74 Prayer.

How much damage can the King Black Dragon hit?

His melee attack hits up to 25, his normal fiery dragonfire up to 65 without protection, and each of his three special breaths up to 50. With an anti-dragon shield plus an antifire potion the regular dragonfire is blocked and the specials are reduced to around 10.

What are his special breath attacks?

He has three special dragonfire breaths in addition to normal fire: icy breath, which can freeze you for 6 seconds; toxic breath, which can poison you starting at 8 damage; and shocking breath, which drains all your stats by 2. They are equally common, and good antifire protection cuts both their damage and their chance to apply an effect.

Which prayer should I use?

Stand in melee range and use Protect from Melee - it negates all of his melee damage and lowers how often he uses his special breaths. If you use a two-handed weapon like a twisted bow (so you cannot hold an anti-dragon shield), pray Protect from Magic instead to reduce the dragonfire damage.

Does the King Black Dragon count as a Slayer task?

Yes. He counts toward a black dragon Slayer task, except when that task is assigned by Krystilia. On a Konar task he can also drop a Brimstone key.
