Dragon hunter crossbow

“A crossbow used for dragon hunting.”

The dragon hunter crossbow is a one-handed crossbow and dragonbane weapon requiring 70 Ranged to wield. It fires bolts at a speed of 6 ticks (3.6s) with a +95 Ranged attack bonus, and its passive grants +30% accuracy and +25% damage versus draconic creatures such as dragons and wyverns. This makes it the go-to ranged weapon for every dragon-based boss and slayer task. It is obtained as a reward from the Chambers of Xeric raid and trades on the GE for around 37M.

Equipment bonuses

The dragon hunter crossbow's standout stat is its +95 Ranged attack bonus, one of the higher values among crossbows (the Armadyl and Zaryte crossbows reach more). It carries no Ranged strength bonus of its own, so its damage comes entirely from the bolts you load and its dragonbane passive.

At 6 ticks per attack (3.6 seconds) on rapid and a low 70 Ranged requirement, it sits as an accessible, best-in-slot crossbow specifically against draconic targets.

How to get the dragon hunter crossbow

The dragon hunter crossbow is a possible unique reward from the Chambers of Xeric, the Great Olm raid in Great Kourend. It cannot be bought from a shop or made — it only drops from the raid's points-based unique table, where higher participation points raise your chance at any unique.

Because it is tradeable, most players simply buy it on the Grand Exchange for around 37M rather than grinding raids for the drop. After claiming the hard-tier Combat Achievements rewards it can be combined with kbd heads for a black recolour, and the elite tier unlocks a turquoise recolour using Vorkath's head.

The dragonbane passive

The crossbow's dragonbane passive gives a 30% increase in Ranged accuracy and a 25% increase in damage when fighting draconic creatures — dragons, wyverns and similar targets. The damage bonus was 30% at launch of the rework but was reduced to 25% in June 2021.

Two notable exceptions exist: Elvarg and revenant dragons are not affected by the bonus. The dragonbane effect stacks additively with a slayer helmet (i) when on a relevant task, but stacks multiplicatively with Void Knight equipment and the salve amulet, so layering the right gear on a dragon task gives a large damage swing.

Is the dragon hunter crossbow worth it?

Against any draconic target the dragon hunter crossbow is the clear best-in-slot crossbow and a core piece of ranged gear. Its +30% accuracy / +25% damage passive far outperforms a generic ranged weapon at bosses like Vorkath, the King Black Dragon and skeletal wyverns, which is why it appears in nearly every dragon-killing setup.

Outside of dragon content it is just a strong crossbow — near identical to the dragon crossbow but with no special attack and 1 higher Ranged bonus. If you fight dragons regularly it is one of the highest-value upgrades you can make; if you never touch draconic content, your money is better spent elsewhere. Plan your loadout around it with the boss gear finder.
