K’ril Tsutsaroth Strategy Guide

AKA - Zammy Requirements - 70 Hitpoints

K’ril Tsutsaroth is a Greater Demon boss in the God Wars Dungeon. His primary attack is melee, he has a strong secondary magic attack, and the three minions in the boss room also attack with all three combat styles, melee, ranged and magic. For this reason, it’s impossible to negate all damage with protection prayers (unless you are extremely skilled at prayer flicking).

K’ril Tsutsaroth has two unique attacks, one will inflict a strong poison on the player which starts at 16 damage. The other is a prayer smash attack, which he will only use if his target is using the protect from melee prayer. This attack can hit up to 49 damage and drains your current prayer points by 50%.

The most common tactic to use at K’ril Tsutsaroth is to use melee, while wearing high defence armour, paying particular attention to magic defence. You can then use the protection from melee prayer to negate all of K’ril Tsutsaroth’s melee attacks.

As K’ril Tsutsaroth is classed as a Greater Demon, a slayer task of Greater Demon will allow you to use a black mask or slayer helmet, which greatly increases your DPS and the number of kills you will be able to achieve in a single trip. The weapon Arclight is also extremely effective against K’ril Tsutsaroth.

Due to the low prices of K’ril Tsutsaroth’s drops and his difficulty level – he is not often killed outside of slayer tasks.

God Wards Dungeon Notes – You will need to bring one rope to gain access to the dungeon for the first time and access to Zamorak’s corner of the dungeon requires you to have 70 hitpoints. When entering the dungeon, you will take damage from a variety of different monsters if you are not properly prepared.  There are certain god-aligned items you can equip in order to give yourself protection from that specific god’s followers. For example, equipping a Bandos Godsword while in the dungeon will make all minions in the dungeon which are aligned with Bandos non-aggressive.

The protection needed in order to have full protection in Zamorak’s corner of the dungeon is  Bandos, Zamorak and Saradomin. However in Zamorak’s Fortress you will only need a Zamorak item to get your kill count and enter the Zamorak boss room comfortably.

Zammy - Melee Tank Guide

As a Melee Tank at K’ril Tsutsaroth, you should use the protection from melee prayer and keep your health and prayer points high at all times. K’ril’s prayer smash technique can hit up-to 49’s and drains 50% of your prayer points and is unblockable, combine that with frequent hits from the ranged and magic minions and the damage can stack up quickly. If your prayer happens to drop to 0 during one of these attacks you might be dead by the time you can re-activate your prayer.

You can utilize the ‘step under’ technique in order to take fewer hits from K’ril Tsutsaroth. What you should do is hit K’ril twice, then immediately run under him so that he is unable to attack you until one of you move. This will give you a couple of seconds to eat if you need to, and then jump out from under him and immediately return to attacking.

The Vengeance spell can be used to reflect some of the prayer smash damage back at K’ril Tsutsaroth, which will help speed up kills.

K'ril Tsutsaroth Guide

K'ril Tsutsaroth is the leader of Zamorak's forces in the God Wars Dungeon, found in Zamorak's Fortress. He is a combat level 650 boss with 255 Hitpoints who attacks with both melee and magic, and he roams his chamber alongside three bodyguards until a player enters. K'ril is classified as a greater demon, so he counts toward any greater demon Slayer task and lets you stack the damage bonus of a Black mask or Slayer helmet. As a demon he is also susceptible to demonbane weapons and spells, which makes the Arclight and Emberlight family the meta melee choice here. He is killed for valuable uniques including the Zamorakian spear, staff of the dead and Zamorak hilt.

Requirements & where to fight

K'ril lives in Zamorak's Fortress inside the God Wars Dungeon. Crossing the river to reach the fortress requires 70 Hitpoints (boostable). To open his chamber you must either use an ecumenical key or have killed 40 Zamorakian followers throughout the dungeon. That kill-count requirement drops to 35, 30, 25 or 15 if you have unlocked the hard, elite, master or grandmaster combat achievement tiers respectively.

Reaching the dungeon itself needs completion of Death Plateau and the start of Troll Stronghold up to defeating Dad (Ghommal's hilt can teleport you to Trollheim instead), plus one rope the first time you enter.

Two fast ways to build kill count: the main room north and east of the rope, where Zamorakian followers and imps fight Bandosians and Saradominists, and the four imp spawns inside Zamorak's Fortress, which you can hop between two worlds to clear quickly with ranged attacks.

Recommended stats & gear

The strategy page lists suggested skills of 90+ Hitpoints, 90+ Defence, 85+ Magic and 70+ Prayer for a tank, and 80+ Hitpoints, 80+ Defence, 75+ Magic and 70+ Prayer for an attacker, both with 85+ in your chosen offensive stats.

For style, K'ril is a demon, so the demonbane melee meta dominates: the Arclight / Emberlight weapon family hits him exceptionally hard and is the default for solo and team melee. Melee gear conveniently carries high melee and ranged defence, so your max-DPS melee setup doubles as your defensive setup. For the highest raw DPS overall, max magic gear with a Tumeken's shadow is the top option but demands tick-perfect play. K'ril also carries a 30% elemental weakness to water spells, though in practice it changes nothing here — neither the meta demonbane melee nor a Tumeken's shadow casts water spells, so the demonbane susceptibility remains the weakness you actually exploit. Whatever style you bring, plug your account into our Boss Gear Finder above for the exact best-in-slot list rather than guessing item by item.

Inventory & supplies

Because K'ril and his minions drop ashes, bones to peaches cannot be used, so manage your Hitpoints carefully. A typical melee trip carries super combat potions, super restores or Sanfew serums, plenty of high-healing food such as Anglerfish or Marlin, and a divine rune pouch.

  • Anti-poison is mandatory — K'ril's melee can inflict poison even through Protect from Melee, so bring an Extended anti-venom+ or Antidote++.
  • A rune pouch with Blood Barrage runes lets you heal off the minions between kills (solo).
  • Guthan's equipment is recommended for healing in teams.
  • A Construction cape or house teleport tab to escape if things go wrong.
  • A Zamorak item must be worn to stay unattacked by Zamorakian followers in the dungeon.

Fight mechanics

K'ril has a 2/3 chance to attack with melee (scimitar swipe, max hit 46, can poison from 16) and a 1/3 chance to attack with magic (a shockwave hitting 10-30). Crucially, his magic attack can only reach a player in melee range — this is exactly why the melee-with-Protect-from-Melee meta works, since standing in close and praying melee leaves only his special and the magic minion to worry about. Both attacks are single-target.

His signature move is the prayer smash. If your target is praying Protect from Melee, K'ril has a 1/9 chance per hit to yell "YARRRRRRR!" and slam down a special that always deals 35-49 damage through prayer and drains half your current prayer points, rounded down. A Spectral spirit shield halves that drain to a quarter. It is not a constant attack — over the whole fight its incidence works out to 2/27 of hits.

To avoid the smash entirely you can instead pray Protect from Magic and stack melee defence, which also neutralises the magic bodyguard, at the cost of much longer kills. Read up on switching overheads in our Prayer guide.

The bodyguards

K'ril is protected by three demons, each using a different combat style:

  • Balfrug Kreeyath — the magic bodyguard, a black demon that launches fire spells dealing up to 16.
  • Tstanon Karlak — the melee bodyguard, a greater demon that claws for up to 15.
  • Zakl'n Gritch — the ranged bodyguard, a lesser demon that throws snowballs for up to 21.

When K'ril dies, the surviving bodyguards each lock onto a random player, regardless of who landed the killing blow, so adjust your overhead prayer to whichever minion is now on you.

Strategy & kill rotation

The standard kill is melee: stand in melee range, pray Protect from Melee, and tank K'ril's hits while focusing demonbane damage on him. Keep your Hitpoints topped up so a prayer smash plus minion hits landing together cannot combo you out.

A popular solo method uses a scorching bow with a lightbearer: the bow's special attack binds K'ril in place to avoid all his damage, enabling long trips of 20-40 kills. Pray Protect from Missiles against Zakl'n Gritch, start each kill in the north-west corner away from Tstanon's spawn, and re-apply the bind every seventh attack while kiting counter-clockwise. Once K'ril dies, kill Balfrug first, then stack the other two minions so a single Blood Barrage heals you off both. A Tumeken's shadow with the 5:0 method is the highest-DPS solo option but needs tick-perfect precision.

In a team, an attacker prays against whichever minion hits their style hardest and tanks the rest — melee attackers pray Protect from Magic, ranged attackers pray Protect from Missiles — while the dedicated tank holds K'ril. Attackers should wait for the tank's first hit before piling on.

Notable drops

K'ril always drops infernal ashes. His unique table is what players are here for: the Zamorakian spear (1/127) and steam battlestaff (1/127) are the more common uniques, while the staff of the dead (1/508) and Zamorak hilt (1/508) are the big-ticket drops. He also drops the three Godsword shards at 1/762 each. The chance of any unique is 3/127, roughly 1 in 42, and there is a 1/5000 chance at the K'ril Tsutsaroth pet. See the full drop table above for everything else.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting anti-poison. K'ril poisons through Protect from Melee, so an antidote is not optional.
  • Letting Hitpoints drift low under Protect from Melee. A prayer smash hits up to 49 through prayer and can stack with minion damage — stay high.
  • Trying to use bones to peaches. The ash drops block it; bring real food and healing instead.
  • Not wearing a Zamorak item, which leaves you attacked by Zamorakian followers on the way in.
  • Attackers jumping in before the tank in a team, which can pull K'ril onto the wrong player.

K Guide — FAQ

What Slayer or quest requirements do I need to fight K'ril Tsutsaroth?

There is no Slayer level requirement to damage him, but you need 70 Hitpoints to cross the river into Zamorak's Fortress, and either an ecumenical key or 40 Zamorakian kills to enter his chamber. Reaching the dungeon needs Death Plateau and the start of Troll Stronghold (up to defeating Dad), plus a rope on your first visit. He counts as a greater demon for Slayer tasks.

What is K'ril's prayer-disabling special attack?

When you pray Protect from Melee, K'ril has a 1/9 chance per hit to use a prayer smash that always deals 35-49 damage through prayer and drains half your current prayer points, rounded down. It does not fully disable prayer, and a Spectral spirit shield halves the drain. Praying Protect from Magic instead avoids it entirely but makes kills slower.

Why is demonbane gear recommended here?

K'ril is a demon, so he is susceptible to demonbane weapons like the Arclight and Emberlight, which deal greatly increased damage to him. That makes them the meta melee weapon family for both solo and team setups. Use our Boss Gear Finder above to see your exact best-in-slot demonbane loadout.

Can I solo K'ril Tsutsaroth?

Yes. A common solo setup is a scorching bow with a lightbearer, using the bow's bind special to avoid all of K'ril's damage for trips of 20-40 kills. A Tumeken's shadow with the 5:0 method gives the highest DPS but needs tick-perfect play. Soloing with demonbane melee is most practical on a Slayer task.
