Obor Best in Slot Gear & Strategy Guide

Obor Strategy Guide

Requirements - 1 x Giant Key

Obor is a free-to-play Hill Giant boss found within his lair in the Edgeville Dungeon.

A giant key, acquired as a rare drop from regular Hill Giants or Cyclops (1/128 chance) is required to first access his lair, but it is not consumed on entry; re-entry is free. A key is instead consumed each time you open the chest inside.

Obor is the only monster to drop the Hill Giant Club, the Best in Slot crush weapon for free-to-play players. This club is one of the most expensive items in free-to-play and has a drop-rate of 1 in 118.

Obor - Free-to-play Melee Guide

Obor has two main attacks – Melee and Ranged. If you choose to use the Protection from Melee prayer, Obor will only use his Ranged attack and vice-versa – it’s therefor not really worth the prayer points to use any Protection prayers during this fight, you will however want to use any offensive melee prayer you have at your disposal.

One important thing to note is that Obor has a special attack which will throw you across the room. To negate this, you should stand up against a wall while attacking him.

Obor Guide

Obor, the Hill Titan, is the hill giant boss of Old School RuneScape, and one of the most beginner-friendly bosses in the game. He lives in his own lair behind the locked gates at the western wall of the hill giant area in the Edgeville Dungeon. Obor is a combat level 106 boss with 120 Hitpoints, and crucially he is free-to-play — no membership required to fight him.

Obor was released on 6 October 2016 as the Hill Giant Boss, designed as a low-level encounter that almost any account can take on. He attacks with Melee (Crush) and Ranged, hitting hard for his level but with no complex phases or special mechanics. The main hurdle is simply getting in: you need a giant key dropped by ordinary Hill Giants to unlock his lair the first time. After that, he is a fast, repeatable kill that rewards more keys, beginner-friendly loot, and a chest of more valuable items.

Requirements & where to fight

Obor resides in Obor's Lair, accessed through the locked gate at the western wall of the hill giant area in the Edgeville Dungeon. There is no quest or Slayer requirement to fight him — he can, however, be assigned as a boss version of a Hill giants Slayer task by Mazchna or Vannaka, granting 129 Slayer experience per kill. See our Slayer guide if you want to fight him on task.

The one real gate is the giant key. A giant key is needed to unlock the gate leading to Obor's lair for the first time, and it is obtained by killing Hill Giants. Importantly, the key is not consumed when unlocking the lair, and subsequent access to the lair does not require a key at all. When you first enter the lair you appear in a safe zone — you must climb down the rocks to actually start the fight.

Members can also use a giantsoul amulet to teleport right outside Obor's lair for faster trips.

Recommended stats & gear

Obor is weak to Earth spells (a 20% elemental weakness), and players approach him in one of four ways. The right setup depends on your combat style — let our Boss Gear Finder build a loadout from your own stats rather than guessing.

Magic (Snare): the safest low-level method, needing 50 Magic and 40 Prayer for Protect from Missiles. You keep Obor frozen and kite him while casting. Lean on our Magic guide and pick Earth spells to exploit his weakness.

Ranged: a strong free-to-play option. At least 50 Defence, 60 Ranged and 40 Prayer are recommended, wearing a rune chainbody — it gives the best Defence against Obor's crush without lowering your Ranged bonus. Members with 75 Ranged can use a toxic blowpipe, since Obor's low Defence and the blowpipe's fast speed make it the strongest weapon against him. Train it up with our Ranged guide and gear from the Ranged gear page.

Melee: the fastest kill method but more dangerous, wanting around 50 Attack/Strength/Defence and 40 Prayer. Free players can use a rune scimitar; members can use an abyssal whip or dragon scimitar. Pair good melee gear with our Strength guide for the damage to finish him fast.

Inventory & supplies

Obor's fights are short, so your inventory is simple. Bring:

  • Food — enough to cover his hard hits. Obor can deal serious damage as soon as a Snare wears off, so do not under-pack.
  • A giant key if you want to open the chest for its better loot after the kill (the chest is opened by consuming a giant key).
  • Ammunition or runes for your chosen style — Earth spell runes are ideal given his weakness.
  • For free-to-play, an energy potion helps you keep kiting in the Magic method, and a Strength potion adds damage if meleeing.

Fight mechanics

Obor has no phases — just two attacks — which is why he is so approachable.

Ranged attack (max 26): Obor's strongest hit. Always turn on Protect from Missiles before you climb down and start the fight. This prayer reduces his ranged attack damage by 50%, which is the single biggest survivability gain you can make.

Melee crush attack (max 22): a slam used at close range. It can knock you back, and your next attack will be slightly delayed afterwards. If you are meleeing or tanking, stand with your back against a wall to limit being shoved around.

Obor attacks on a 6-tick speed and is aggressive, so he will come straight for you the moment the fight begins.

Strategy / kill rotation

Magic (Snare) — safest: Protect from Missiles on, climb down, then open with Snare to stop Obor reaching you. Recast it every time he can walk again. Kite him: wait for him to come near one wall, Snare, then run to the far side casting offensive spells (Earth spells for his weakness) in between, and repeat. Note that Snare does not always hold him for the full duration, so watch him — members can use stronger binds like Entangle or Ice spells. Bring enough food regardless.

Magic (Tank) — members: with 50 Magic, 60 Defence and 42 in other combat stats, stand back-to-wall, pray a Defence prayer such as Steel Skin, and tank him down while exploiting his magic weakness. Expect to take more damage this way.

Ranged / Melee: with Protect from Missiles up and your back to a wall, simply out-DPS him — both are faster than the Snare method, with Melee fastest but riskiest.

Notable drops

Since the June 2025 rework, Obor himself drops a simpler table (giant bones for members, big bones for free players, runes, coins, herbs and seeds), while the more valuable rewards sit in the chest in his lair, opened with a giant key after each kill.

The headline drop is the giant key itself at a rate of 1/16 — letting you keep coming back. Other standout drops include the ensouled giant head (1/25), the rare giant champion scroll (1/5000) for the Champions' Challenge, and a beginner clue scroll. Obor's own direct table is the cheap stuff — iron full helm, iron dagger, iron kiteshield and a steel longsword. The real prize is the chest, which holds rune gear (rune kiteshield, full helm, med helm, chainbody, platelegs, plateskirt, battleaxe, longsword and 2h sword) and is the only source of the hill giant club, a powerful two-handed melee weapon, at a rate of 1/118. The full drop table with exact rates is shown above.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting Protect from Missiles before climbing down. His ranged attack is his biggest hit and the prayer halves it — turn it on in the safe zone first.
  • Trying to enter without a giant key the first time. You must obtain one from Hill Giants to unlock the lair initially — though you will not lose it, and never need one for access again.
  • Skipping the chest. Obor's own drops are modest; the valuable loot is in the chest, which needs a giant key to open after the kill.
  • Under-packing food. When a Snare lapses, Obor can hit hard immediately — do not bring a thin inventory just because he is low level.

Obor Guide — FAQ

Do I need a giant key every time I fight Obor?

No. A giant key is only needed to unlock the gate to Obor's lair the first time, and it is not consumed when you do so. After that, access to the lair never requires a key. You only need a key again if you want to open the chest for its better loot after a kill.

Is Obor free-to-play?

Yes. Obor is fully available on free-to-play worlds — he is one of the few bosses F2P accounts can fight, which makes him a popular first boss.

What's the best way to kill Obor as a low-level player?

The Magic (Snare) method is safest, needing just 50 Magic and 40 Prayer. You freeze Obor with Snare and kite him while casting — Earth spells are ideal since he has a 20% weakness to them. Always pray Protect from Missiles. Use our Boss Gear Finder for a loadout matched to your stats.

What prayer should I use against Obor?

Protect from Missiles. Obor's ranged attack is his hardest hit (max 26), and this prayer reduces its damage by 50%. Turn it on before climbing down to start the fight.
