Dragon bolts

“Dragon crossbow bolts.”

Dragon bolts are crossbow ammo: +122 Ranged strength, 64 Ranged to use, against +115 for runite bolts. They only fit a dragon crossbow, Armadyl crossbow, dragon hunter crossbow or Zaryte crossbow. They are also the base for every gem-tipped, enchanted dragon bolt.

Equipment bonuses

The only bonus that matters is +122 Ranged strength. There is no attack bonus on the bolts themselves, so your crossbow supplies the accuracy.

Who uses Dragon bolts

Dragon bolts are ammo for four crossbows only. A rune crossbow cannot fire them.

Crossbows that fire them
Dragon crossbow — needs 64 Ranged, the same as the bolts.
Dragon hunter crossbow — needs 70 Ranged.
Armadyl crossbow — needs 70 Ranged.
Zaryte crossbow — needs 80 Ranged.

Plain dragon bolts are often a starting point, not a final ammo. Any bolt tip except amethyst can be added to them, and the tipped bolts can then be enchanted. The enchanted bolts keep the +122 Ranged strength.

For the rest of your Ranged kit, see ranged gear.

How to get Dragon bolts

You cannot make them from raw materials. They come from unfinished dragon bolts, which are monster and chest drops.

Ways to obtain them
Fletching — use feathers on unfinished dragon bolts at 84 Fletching. It gives 12 XP per bolt, and you make them 10 at a time.
Unfinished dragon bolts drop from Nex, rune dragons (20–40 at 1/127), adamant dragons (15–20 at 1/110), Vorkath (50–100 at 2 × 8/150), the Leviathan, Phantom Muspah, the Forgotten lockbox, the Ancient Vault chest and the Fortis Colosseum rewards chest.
Grand Exchange — dragon bolts and unfinished dragon bolts are both tradeable. The buy limit on finished bolts is 11,000 every 4 hours.

Dragon bolts vs runite bolts

Runite bolts give +115 Ranged strength and need 61 Ranged. Dragon bolts give 7 more and need 64 Ranged.

Poison is possible but costs you the tips. Dragon bolts can be poisoned with weapon poison, and poisoned bolts cannot take bolt tips afterwards. Leave them unpoisoned if you want the tipped and enchanted versions.

Two tipped versions show what the tips add. Onyx dragon bolts (e) are enchanted at 87 Magic and have a Life Leech effect. The onyx comes from cutting uncut onyx. Diamond dragon bolts (e) are enchanted at 57 Magic and have an Armour Piercing effect with a 10% chance (5% against players).
