Commander Zilyana Strategy Guide

AKA - Sara Requirements - 70 Agility

Commander Zilyana is a powerful boss in the God Wars Dungeon. Her primary attack is melee although she also uses a magic attack. Zilyana’s attacks magic attacks will hit every player in the room at the same time, but she will only use this magic attack when she is within melee distance of a player.

For this reason, combined with the fact her melee speed is very high and that she can hit up to 31, the primary tactic at Zilyana is to use stamina potions to allow yourself to ‘kite’ Zilyana around the room and attack her with range while she’s kept at a distance.

Ecumenical keys – Due to the difficulty in getting the 40 kill count required to enter the Saradomin boss room – it’s highly recommended to obtain an ecumenical key instead. The ecumenical key will allow you to bypass the kill count requirement and can be obtained much quicker from the Wilderness God Wars Dungeon before you make your trip to Saradomin.

God Wards Dungeon Notes – You will need to bring one rope to gain access to the dungeon for the first time and access to Saradomin’s Encampment in the dungeon requires you to have 70 agility and two ropes (first time only). When entering the dungeon, you will take damage from a variety of different monsters if you are not properly prepared.  There are certain god-aligned items you can equip in order to give yourself protection from that specific god’s followers. For example, equipping a Bandos Godsword while in the dungeon will make all minions in the dungeon which are aligned with Bandos non-aggressive.

The protection needed in order to have full protection in both Saradomin’s corner and Saradomin’s Encampment in the dungeon is  Zamorak and Saradomin.

Sara - Ranged Guide

While the tactics for Commander Zilyana are a little more involved than the other God Wars Dungeon bosses, once you get some practice it will start to come naturally. when you enter the room, use the protect from magic prayer and immediately run to the wall. As Zilyana starts to approach you, attack with your ranged weapon and immediately retreat along the wall, while simultaneously attacking. Once you reach the corner, allow Zilyana to get a little closer and then attack again, whilst running along the next wall.

In this manner, you can take 0 damage from Zilyana, and you will only take damage from the ranged minion.

Sara - Veracs Melee Guide

Using melee at Commander Zilyana is really not recommended unless you’re in a group, but making use of Verac’s ability to hit through high defence does make it viable. Ideally, you have a group of three players all using Veracs to make this method most effective.

You should use protect from magic prayer and focus on trying to down Zilyana as quickly as possible, before switching to the minions.

Commander Zilyana Guide

Commander Zilyana is the appointed leader of Saradomin's forces in the God Wars Dungeon and one of only two known still-living representatives of the Icyene race. She is a combat level 596 boss whose examine reads simply: "Commander of Saradomin's forces." First released on 17 October 2013, she is the Saradominist general players fight in the Saradomin Encampment alongside her three bodyguards.

Zilyana stands apart from the other God Wars generals because of her attack style. She has a relatively low max hit — 27 with melee and 20 with magic — but makes up for it with extremely fast, accurate attacks at an attack speed of 2 (roughly 1.2 seconds per swing). Crucially, she can only attack a player who is within melee distance, which is the foundation of nearly every strategy used against her. Stand still next to her and you will die quickly; keep moving and she cannot touch you at all.

She is a popular target for both money-making and Slayer. Konar, Nieve, and Duradel can all assign her as a Slayer task, and killing her grants 350 Slayer experience per kill. Her drop table includes some of the most valuable items in the game, anchored by the Armadyl crossbow and the Saradomin hilt. Requirements & Where to Fight Her

Commander Zilyana lives in the Saradomin boss room (Saradomin Encampment) inside the God Wars Dungeon. Getting to her involves two layers of requirements: getting into the dungeon itself, and then getting into her chamber.

Reaching the God Wars Dungeon. The standard route requires completing Death Plateau and starting Troll Stronghold up to the point where you defeat Dad. Alternatively, a Ghommal's hilt can teleport you to Trollheim without needing either quest. You will need one rope to access the God Wars Dungeon for the first time.

Entering the Saradomin Encampment. To enter Saradomin's area of the dungeon you need two additional ropes to navigate the obstacles on your first visit. Putting that together: if this is your very first trip into the God Wars Dungeon, bring three ropes total. You also need level 70 Agility to access the encampment, and this cannot be boosted — there is no way around it with a potion. Getting into her chamber. Once inside the encampment, you reach Zilyana's room in one of two ways. You can use an ecumenical key to skip the kill count entirely, or you can build up killcount by killing 40 of Saradomin's followers throughout the dungeon. (That requirement drops for players who have unlocked combat achievement tiers — 35 for hard, 30 for elite, 25 for master, and 15 for grandmaster.) Many players prefer the ecumenical key to skip the kill count, exactly as they do at Kree'arra. Saradominist kill count is considered reasonably quick, especially with 83 Slayer, because Saradominist spiritual warriors and mages are aggressive toward Zamorakian followers; the remaining followers are passive and only fight back in self-defence.

You will also want level 37 Prayer at minimum to activate Protect from Magic, which is central to surviving the fight.

Recommended Stats & Gear

The wiki's suggested stats give a clear baseline for a comfortable solo trip:

  • Combat 100+
  • Agility 70+ (required — this is the hard gate to enter)
  • Ranged 80+
  • Defence 80+ (90+ recommended)
  • Hitpoints 70+
  • Prayer 44+ (74+ for Rigour)

The meta style is Ranged. Although Zilyana has equal defence against all attack styles, Ranged is the practical mainstream choice. Magic is generally impractical here apart from the Tumeken's shadow, because magic armour offers little defence and burns through rune costs unnecessarily. There is also a specific reason Ranged shines on this boss: in the 29 May 2024 Project Rebalance update, Zilyana's heavy Ranged defence was lowered from 100 to 75, making her notably softer against heavy ranged ammunition than she used to be.

For the Ranged approach, the most common weapon setups are a crossbow with enchanted diamond bolts, full crystal armour with a Bow of faerdhinen, or a twisted bow. The wiki lists weapon priority broadly as twisted bow / Bow of faerdhinen / Zaryte crossbow at the top, down through the Armadyl crossbow, Dragon hunter crossbow, Dragon crossbow, and Rune crossbow for cheaper options. Top armour slots favour the Masori set, crystal armour, or solid dragonhide alternatives, with a necklace of anguish or amulet of fury, and ranging-focused boots, ring, and cape choices.

If you prefer Magic, the strongest conventional weapon is the Tumeken's shadow, paired with high-end magic gear like the Ancestral or Virtus sets. Be warned: the wiki notes this strategy needs almost completely maxed mage gear, because the shadow multiplies the magic bonuses of your other pieces — even one downgrade dramatically worsens kill times. For most players who lack best-in-slot in two or more slots, ranging is more effective.

One detail that matters at all God Wars generals: you must wear god-aligned items to avoid being attacked by the dungeon's followers. The wiki strongly recommends bringing at least one Saradomin item and one Zamorak item. Inventory & Supplies

A standard Ranged trip is built around staying alive through the bodyguard you are not praying against, while you whittle Zilyana down. The wiki's recommended supplies for a Ranged trip include:

  • 8–16 Saradomin brews or sharks (brews and super restores should be brought in roughly a 3:1 ratio)
  • 6–12 super restores or prayer potions
  • 1–4 Divine bastion potions or Divine ranging potions for the ranged damage boost
  • 1–4 stamina potions (optional for higher-levelled, geared players or those using run-energy-neutral kiting methods)
  • A Toxic blowpipe to kill the minions
  • A Serpentine helm switch to envenom the minions at the start of a kill (optional, but it guarantees venom on hit)
  • An Explorer's ring 4 for High Level Alchemy and run-energy restoration
  • An ecumenical key (optional) to skip kill count
  • A divine rune pouch with law, nature, dust, and steam runes, enabling Trollheim Teleport, Teleport to House, High Level Alchemy, and Bones to Peaches
  • A Ghommal's hilt or two Trollheim teleport tablets for travel

The blowpipe-and-serpentine-helm combination is worth understanding: envenoming the bodyguards early lets their health tick down passively while you focus on Zilyana, which speeds up the kill — especially helpful if you are not using a twisted bow.

If you are running the Magic setup instead, the inventory shifts toward an Eldritch nightmare staff (or eye of ayak / accursed sceptre) for special attacks, a Saturated heart, anglerfish and Saradomin brews for emergency healing, around 16 super restores, and a rune pouch stocked for Blood Barrage and Ice Barrage. Blood Barrage is particularly useful for healing off the bodyguards.

Fight Mechanics: Zilyana & Her Three Bodyguards

Like the other God Wars generals, Zilyana roams her rectangular room with her bodyguards until a player enters, at which point they all attack on sight. The single most important mechanic is this: Zilyana can only attack when she is in melee distance of a player — exactly like Graardor and K'ril. Keep your distance and she cannot hit you.

Zilyana herself. She attacks with both melee (Crush) and magic, and sits on 255 Hitpoints of her own. Her melee max hit is 27; her magic max hit is 20, and her magic is only used at melee distance, with a minimum hit of 10 (so 10–20) when it lands. Her real danger is speed and accuracy: at attack speed 2 (about 1.2 seconds) with tremendous accuracy, standing in melee range of her leads to a swift death. Pray Protect from Magic if you are ranging her, or Protect from Missiles if you are using Magic. Done correctly, the only damage you take should be from the one minion your prayer does not block. If every player leaves the room, her health and stats reset.

Her three bodyguards each use a different combat style, and each has a low max hit relative to other generals' minions — but they should not be underestimated:

  • Starlight (Melee) — max hit 15. Like Zilyana, Starlight cannot reach you while you keep moving, so kiting neutralises this minion.
  • Bree (Ranged) — max hit 16. When you pray Protect from Magic against Zilyana, Bree is the minion that can still hit you, so high ranged defence helps here.
  • Growler (Magic) — max hit 16. If you pray Protect from Missiles instead (Magic setup), Growler is the one that gets through.

Because each bodyguard uses a distinct style, your single overhead prayer blocks Zilyana plus one minion's style, leaving exactly one minion able to damage you. Strategy & Kill Rotation

The core technique against Zilyana is kiting — her chamber is large, so by running around it you ensure that only the minion you are not praying against can damage you, because both Starlight and Zilyana cannot reach you unless you stop moving. The most common method is simply running around the chamber.

A clean solo Ranged kill looks like this:

  • Enter the room (using your ecumenical key to skip kill count, or after building killcount) and immediately activate Protect from Magic.
  • If you are using the serpentine helm switch, hit the bodyguards early to envenom them so their health drains while you work.
  • Begin attacking Zilyana while kiting — keep moving so she and Starlight cannot land hits. Bree's ranged attack is the only damage that should get through.
  • Use your blowpipe to clear or weaken the minions as needed; envenomed minions die faster on their own.
  • Heal with Saradomin brews, top your stats back up with super restores, and keep your overhead prayer on throughout.

Advanced no-stamina kiting. Experienced players running crystal armour and a Bow of faerdhinen can use a tile-perfect pattern that lets them attack Zilyana up to 12 times per lap without taking a hit, while conserving run energy — around 10–12 run energy per lap at roughly 80 Agility, removing the need for stamina potions entirely. The bodyguards also have a chance to drop summer pies, which restore 10% run energy per bite (20% total), further supporting a no-stamina rotation. This is optional polish; the standard kite works fine for most players.

In a team, Zilyana shifts her aggression to a nearby attacker if she cannot reach her current target, which ranging teams exploit to cut down on stamina potions. Teams can also have players or alts attack Bree and Starlight directly — if several players are present, the bodyguards only attack those who have attacked Zilyana, so support players only need to worry about her magic attack. Note that killed bodyguards are likely to respawn if Zilyana is still alive, so it can be better to limit how much damage you do to them.

For the Magic route, combining Blood Barrage to heal off the bodyguards with an Eldritch nightmare staff special attack — especially with the cooldown reduction from a Lightbearer — can let a player stay in the lair almost indefinitely, limited only by runes, weapon charges, and run energy.

Common Mistakes

  • Standing still next to Zilyana. This is the single fastest way to die. Her low max hit is deceptive — her speed and accuracy make melee range lethal. Always keep moving and kite.
  • Using the wrong overhead prayer. Pray Protect from Magic when ranging, Protect from Missiles when using Magic. The wrong prayer leaves Zilyana's own attack unblocked on top of a minion.
  • Forgetting your god items. Bring at least one Saradomin and one Zamorak item, or the dungeon's followers will attack you on the way in.
  • Trying to boost Agility. The 70 Agility requirement cannot be boosted — you genuinely need the level.
  • Under-packing ropes on a first trip. A first-ever God Wars Dungeon visit needs three ropes total (one for the dungeon, two for the encampment), not just the two for Saradomin's area.
  • Over-killing the bodyguards in a team. If Zilyana is still alive, dead bodyguards respawn, so dumping damage into them can be wasted effort.
  • Forcing Magic without maxed gear. Because Tumeken's shadow multiplies your other magic bonuses, a single gear downgrade tanks your kill times — range instead unless your mage setup is near best-in-slot.

Which prayer should I use?

If you're ranging her, pray Protect from Magic; if you're using Magic, pray Protect from Missiles.
